Are Henry and Henrietta too similar?

For example, If a parent was called Henry, would it be okay to call their child Henrietta as it's a different name or is it too similar? I know a lot of people aren't fans of giving children the exact same name but if it's a feminine or masculine version, is that okay? Many thanks

Yes I think that's lovely

FluffMagnet · 31/05/2023 14:34

We chose not to use one because our DC's cousin was called the other. Family thought we were overthinking waaaay too much when we subsequently let on.

Thirty5 · 31/05/2023 14:35

Nope it’s daft

DuchessOfSausage · 31/05/2023 14:35

It's fine, but Harriet is nicer than Henrietta and has the same meaning.

user1492757084 · 31/05/2023 14:35

No.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 31/05/2023 14:36

Sorry but no way. They will honestly not thankyou when they're a bit older.

And I say this as a mum with 2 children with similar sounding names but the examples you've given are too closely related IMHO.

May as well call them pinkie and perkie.

Bigglebiggle · 31/05/2023 14:36

I generally thought you where asking about hoovers

Outdamnspot23 · 31/05/2023 14:37

No it's way too similar! I know a couple of John/Jonathan and Joseph/Josephine type families and it's endlessly confusing (if not for them, for everyone else).

Has quite a weird feel about it too like Nigel Lawson/Nigella Lawson.

Neekoh · 31/05/2023 14:37

Naming a child the feminine/masculine name of their opposite sex parent is absolutely fine.

Siblings? No.

SeeingSpots · 31/05/2023 14:37

It seems daft and unimaginative given how many millions of names there are to choose from.

If I met a dad called Henry who had a daughter called Henrietta I would honestly think he was very full of himself.

Thelastofbus · 31/05/2023 14:38

It would be ridiculous to have siblings with those names, but ok for a father and daughter. They are basically the same name though, so you are naming the daughter after the father. Personally I think children deserve their own name, and I think honour names are best kept for middle names.

Ylvamoon · 31/05/2023 14:43

I would do it- but Henrietta would have to be known as Etta.
I only recently came across Etta recently, I think it's a lovely name in it's own right!

Beamur · 31/05/2023 14:45

I wouldn't name siblings effectively the same name but feminine/masculine versions.

Riverlee · 31/05/2023 14:47

Parent/child fine - lots of children have the same names as their parent so this in know difference,

siblings - no, although I do know someone who name son from first marriage and daughter with new partner similar names such as this.

fUNNYfACE36 · 31/05/2023 14:55

It is very very traditional for children to be called after their parents.i am surprised this is even a question

Wednesdaysotherchild · 31/05/2023 14:56

fUNNYfACE36 · 31/05/2023 14:57

The little henriettas I have come across usually go by Hettie

tweener · 31/05/2023 14:59

My first thought was Henry and Henrietta hoovers..

ourflagmeansdeath · 31/05/2023 20:57

Yeah it's fine for a dad and daughter, not for brother and sister. I wouldn't personally do it but there isn't an issue with parent+child just not for siblings.

CatsOnTheChair · 31/05/2023 21:07

Parent and child - fine
Siblings - not great

Elodie741 · 31/05/2023 21:40

My DH and his DS have this and it’s awful… I constantly have to explain during conversations with others that yes they do effectively have the same name… don’t do it!

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 31/05/2023 21:42

Nigel Lawson and Nigella Lawson managed ok!

Augend23 · 31/05/2023 21:44

I think it's within normal realms if it's parent and child, but need to be clear you are naming the child after the parent. Not fine for siblings.

LotsOfBalloons · 31/05/2023 21:46

No. Don't do it!
