Are Henry and Henrietta too similar?

For example, If a parent was called Henry, would it be okay to call their child Henrietta as it's a different name or is it too similar? I know a lot of people aren't fans of giving children the exact same name but if it's a feminine or masculine version, is that okay? Many thanks

I was named after my dad with the feminine version. It’s not something I’d do but it’s fine. Some pairs standout more than others but generally it’s ok.

Sorry but no way. They will honestly not thankyou when they're a bit older.

And I say this as a mum with 2 children with similar sounding names but the examples you've given are too closely related IMHO.

May as well call them pinkie and perkie.

It's father and daughter not two siblings

continentallentil · 01/06/2023 21:45

It’s pretty much the same as having Henry and Henry.

But you could use different sounding nns. It’s sort of sweet.

continentallentil · 01/06/2023 21:46

… or sort of ragingly egotistical, obviously

Sewingdufus · 01/06/2023 21:57

I have friends whose third child has the male version of his Mum’s name. It’s too close for me but each to their own.

Twins at DS nursery, Hen and Hetty

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/06/2023 22:04

I would say it’s too close for siblings but okay for most other relationships such as parent and child or cousins.

Startyabastard · 01/06/2023 22:07

Yes nice but only if different from the ones you gave.

UsingChangeofName · 01/06/2023 22:24

Yes, far too similar.

I generally thought you where asking about hoovers

Don't do it. There's thousands of other names to choose from.

ShandaLear · 01/06/2023 22:39

The feminine version of an English male name often looks like a lazy afterthought. I’d give a daughter a good strong name in her own right.

It would be ridiculous to have siblings with those names, but ok for a father and daughter. They are basically the same name though, so you are naming the daughter after the father. Personally I think children deserve their own name, and I think honour names are best kept for middle names.

I agree with this. Better as a middle name, so the child can have their own name, in their own right.

Never even crossed my mind! Shows how often I do the vacuuming..

No because it’s hugely egotistical, or comes across that way.

The only Henrietta I know goes by Henri.

Longdarkcloud · 04/06/2023 16:56

I know sibs called Henry and Harriet which I find rather odd.
Henrietta isn’t the nicest of names — rather too clumsy.
A likely question will be “we’re you hoping to a boy to name after his father?”

Usernamenotavailab · 04/06/2023 17:00

jada and will smith did it 🤷‍♀️

personally I think it’s a bit odd. And a bit egotistical, as pp said

but then there’s also a trend for doing this with twins- I know an Oliver and Olivia, and a couple of other sets with masculine/feminine versions of the same name.

amylou8 · 04/06/2023 17:15

Siblings absolutely not. Other family member, parents/cousins etc fine.
