How popular is Piper?

I love the girls name Piper, and I’m considering calling DD this. Is it an unusual name? Because I haven’t met any. Is Piper a nice name? Do you know any Pipers, and if so, how many, how old are they and where abouts are you in the country? I live in a suburban area in London, and I can’t remember hearing the name so hopefully it will be nice and unusual. Opinions are welcome ❤️

I have a Piper who will be sixteen in September. She was born in Devon when we were living in East Cornwall. It's actually an old English name meaning pipe player, just has been more popular in the USA. I found It in the Fourty thousand and one baby name book and fitted my requirements for being unusual enough and went well with Kricket elder daughter's name and totally outing.) It was my second choice of name for her as the first choice would give an unacceptable initial sequence. We have met one other Piper many years ago. I'm obviously bias but she is a delightful girl and the name really suits her.

Are you saying that your other daughter’s name is Kricket or have I misunderstood / is autocorrect involved?

shutthewindownow · 16/04/2023 20:06

I know of one she's 5 and in Essex I love the name

Skybluepinky · 16/04/2023 20:12

Very popular def not unique.

Thelastofbus · 16/04/2023 20:14

I’m not entirely sure this is being said seriously or not, but it made me
laugh! “hi my name’s Piper, it’s an old name meaning piper” 😜

ISolemnlySwearIAmUpToNoGood · 16/04/2023 20:15

My DD is 7 and there is a Piper in her class. We're in South Wales.

Pancakepipsqueak · 16/04/2023 20:17

I have a 2.5 year old Piper. We call her Pip.

I am fascinated by this.

piper is pie-per, rhymes with swiper because of the split digraph i_e. Are you saying they pronounce it pip-er, to rhyme with zipper?!

Yes, happens loads.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 16/04/2023 20:34

Brendabigbaps · 16/04/2023 20:32

Yes, happens loads.

But - pie-per is the correct pronunciation of Piper in English. Where do they live?!

PriamFarrl · 16/04/2023 20:36

I had a cat called Piper and I’ve taught a Piper (actually all the children in that family shared names with my childhood cats.)

PickleOfAConundrum · 16/04/2023 20:37

I've never heard of any girl called Piper but from you mentioning it I honestly think it it's a beautiful name. Its unique!

“It’s actually an old English name meaning pipe player.”

No shit…

garlictwist · 16/04/2023 20:40

Don't use it if you ever plan to move to France...

DiscoBeat · 16/04/2023 20:40

I know a dog Piper too! Never heard of it as a child's name though.

DiscoBeat · 16/04/2023 20:41

look on local free sites and you'll see things like Dinning Tables and Filling Cabinets listed.

Two American actresses are called Piper. Perabo was in Coyote Ugly and is now appearing in Yellowstone. Laurie was well known for Twin Peaks. Piper is her stage name.

Odile13 · 16/04/2023 20:42

I like it, it’s pretty and unusual. I don’t know any in real life. It makes me think of the actress Piper Perabo.

IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021 · 16/04/2023 20:43

I have one. From Scotland she's 4. She does get it shortened to pipes though which annoys me.

WheelsUp · 16/04/2023 20:46

I think of Orange is The New Black and Charmed.

Would you be willing to share your first choice of name?

Just interested as I like both of the other names you've chosen!

AndStand · 16/04/2023 21:33

I quite like it, but weren't some oil rigs called it? Piper Alpha etc....

Viviennemary · 16/04/2023 21:34

I don't know any. It's not a very attractive sounding name.

SemperIdem · 16/04/2023 22:49

I know one, she’s 5/6.

It’s not a name I would choose, but I do think it is a nice name.

PMAmostofthetime · 16/04/2023 23:33

@Ellsxox
Know 1 age 9 South Wales l.
Pretty name not common it not too out there l.

user1492757084 · 17/04/2023 05:56

Piper, I like.
It is similar to Harper and Sailor to me in sound and fashion.
It is musical, Scottish slant, smart and sassy where as Harper is very similar though metalic and Sailor is more the common ditty or string jig...
