Is Carmie a girl or a boy name?

I absolutely love the name Carmie for a boy, but my hubby loves it for a girl. What do people think? Is it more suited to a girl or a boy? Could a grown man be a Carmie?

Carmy is a boy in The Bear

Sirzy · 21/03/2023 15:07

I can only see it as nickname for something like Carmen.

WaltzingWaters · 21/03/2023 15:08

Sorry, can’t say I’m a fan either way, but I think it sounds more of a girls name.

PuntoEBasta · 21/03/2023 15:11

Carmine is a boys’ name and could be known as Carmie.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 21/03/2023 15:21

My first thought was a diminutive of Carmen or Carmel (f) or Carmine (m), similar to how Charlie could be Charles or Charlotte, Frankie could be Francis or Frances/Francesca, etc. On its own it seems a little informal/young for a grown man to me - but then Archie, Freddie, Alfie, etc. are very popular, so why not?

Flockameanie · 21/03/2023 15:21

Boys name. Makes me think of mobsters! (There’s a Carmie in The Sopranos, I think)

shakeitoffsis · 21/03/2023 15:37

Sounds made up

ReadersD1gest · 21/03/2023 15:38

Is it a name at all?

About to say the same thing!

Stravawindow · 21/03/2023 15:40

Sorry OP but it makes me think of an Italian restaurant in New York.

JorisBonson · 21/03/2023 15:40

Is it even a name?

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 21/03/2023 15:43

Sounds like the name of someone who gets bullied in school for their name I'm afraid, boy or girl.

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 21/03/2023 15:56

An Italian American boy. Probably short for Carmine

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 21/03/2023 15:58

Sounds like a shortening of Carmel to me, so girl.

Hoppinggreen · 21/03/2023 15:59

Neither

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 21/03/2023 16:01

Carmie reads like a nickname - like Homer in the Simpsons is "Homie".

So1invictus · 21/03/2023 16:05

Could be short for Carmine (but don't call your child that, the Italian ones are all about 90 except the ones who've been named after Grandad) Or Carmen, or Carmela.
All a bit old fashioned tbh.
If you want to just go with Carmie, it sounds more female than male.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 21/03/2023 16:06

If you like it, go for it. Short for Carmine, masc, whenever I’ve heard it, but you could go for another gangster name as her Sunday name - Carmella! I can’t imagine she’d get picked on for Carmie round here (though it depends where you live maybe) kids at DCs schools with parents from all over the world, lots of lovely individual nick-names and diminutives.

Figgygal · 21/03/2023 16:08

Boy but a shortened version of something else not just a name itself

FlounderingFruitcake · 21/03/2023 16:09

Sounds like a character in a mobster movie but it could be short for Carmela or Carmine so works for boys or girls I guess!

Midlander01 · 21/03/2023 16:13

I know a few Camrie's (female) but never heard of Carmie.

HuggingtheHRT · 21/03/2023 16:14

Could be Carmel, Carmen or Carmine.

PeekAtYou · 21/03/2023 16:18

I would assume female (Carmel etc)

Cammie could be male or female but I would assume that a male might become Cam later.

QuackMooBaaOink · 21/03/2023 16:23

I would assume it is a girl's name, similar to Carmen, Carmine, Cammie etc.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/03/2023 16:23

Or short for Carmichael? It's dreadful as a stand alone name though, regardless of sex or gender.
