I once met a family.....

They had a US mother and Yugoslavian dad (in the days of the cold war)

Their mother liked to read and to name children after characters in books.

DD1 - Glumdalclitch (a character from Gulliver's travels)
DS1 - Ocean (from Oceans ride)
DS2 Heathcliff (work that one out for yourself)
DS3 - Jeswaldo [sp?]
DS4 - Thirsten Twirst [sp?]

My dad wanted to lend her the hitch-hikers guide the galaxy

My mum threatened him with death if he did as she couldn't face being responsible for a slarty bardfast or a zafod

Go on - beat that for daft names (loved the kids btw, who were my age or younger - and Glummy - if you are out there on MN, I would love to get in touch)

Met a guy in a chemist whose little boy was named Pushkin. Thought that was about as pretentious as it gets.

Someone my DH worked with called his son Gandalf! Everyone thought he was joking when he announced it and it took some persuading that they really had called the poor boy that!

They lived in Switzerland, and I think their peers either thought they were normal US names or normal Yugoslav names

My friend has called her baby Ptolomy and my daughters middle name is Ocean.

I think names are personal things and being rude about other peoples choices is unnecessary and often hurtful.

there was a boy called HEathcliff at my school. he was about 5'1" and blond and weedy. poor bugger.

obviously it is a free country and anyone is free to be as extraordinarily pretentious as they like.

I've seen on several occasions people taking the p*ss out of a name they've heard/seen.........only to then discover that the name is a perfectly normal name in the parents cultural background.

If my son was born 8 days earlier I was going to call him Pubert. If he was a girl she'd have been called Puberti. If you choose to be born on april 1st youre asking for trouble.

I love Ptolemy. Wouldn't use it for surname reasons. And pisstaking from other kids. But I do like it.

I think Dalek is the worst name you could give a kid.
