Luan for a boys name (pronounced Loo-an)

Thoughts on the name "Luan" for boys name.
Means 'warrior', 'strong' and 'warlike' in Irish.
" Moon" in Portuguese and "Lion" in Albanian.

The only person I know with a similar sounding name is a woman called Lou-Anne and she is from the Deep South of America. Lovely woman, but it's never a name I would associate for a boy/man. I'm assuming the name you're suggesting would have the same or very similar pronunciation?

TwinsAndTiramisu · 12/03/2023 23:16

Like the chap from Gangs of London?

If I heard it aloud, I think Luanne, which is the much more common female version.

I think potentially people seeing it written down would pronounce it Lewan, like Ewan. But would soon be corrected I guess.

Flipflops123 · 12/03/2023 23:17

I know a couple of boys with this name. I love it. Although I think they spell it Leuan

Schmutter · 12/03/2023 23:19

Like the real housewife? No.

It would be less terrible if it was pronounced like Ewan.

PriamFarrl · 12/03/2023 23:21

I know a few Louannes but they are all women (various spellings).

I guess it would be ok if you pronounced it Lewin.

M0rT · 12/03/2023 23:23

I know an Irish Luan, but it's not pronounced Lu-An, it's more like Lewin.

dotdotdotdash · 12/03/2023 23:26

Lewin is good, but Luan sounds like Luanne - too feminine

Incidentally a cracking song by Foreigner - https://open.spotify.com/track/52n3a8WmMqkfMN6R84x7r3?si=3fBYCUjBSreglH9rlqklIQ&app_destination=copy-link

Got2besoon · 12/03/2023 23:27

The Portuguese for moon is lua not luan.

In Irish Luan is Monday, so I'd assume he was born on a Monday.

CrotchetyCrocheting · 12/03/2023 23:28

It makes me think of Monday.

SpringIntoChaos · 12/03/2023 23:30

I only know one Luan and she's female and goes by Lu. I didn't realise it was a boys name too. It's nice though, either way ☺️

RightOnTheEdge · 12/03/2023 23:32

A woman I know is called Luan pronounced Loo-ann.
She's the only Luan I've ever known so I think of it as a feminine name.
I can't imagine a man called that.
I have what people always think of as a male name though and I like it, so use whatever name you like.

theyoungishman · 12/03/2023 23:36

I know an Albanian Luan, but if you don't have Albanian heritage, I would think it a bit strange...

ourflagmeansdeath · 12/03/2023 23:36

Makes me think of the female Luan Loud from The Loud House so it'll always have a feminine connotation. I just don't like it either way but def better as a girl's name.

How about Leon? It's much nicer imo and also means lion but in Greek instead.

Endofmytether1 · 12/03/2023 23:37

This is my nephew's name. He is Breton and this is a name used in Brittany.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/03/2023 00:47

A friend had a dog called this, but anyway it’s a nice name. Go for it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/03/2023 00:48

… she’s Scottish (the friend not the dog) - I assume the name is? It sounds it.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/03/2023 00:51

I knew a pupil called Luan once. I think it was probably supposed to be pronounced like Lewin really but everyone just called him Lou-Anne. Up to you if you’d want to saddle your child with a name that most people would pronounce not only wrongly but the name of the opposite sex.

CallieQ · 13/03/2023 00:58

Pick a normal name

sashh · 13/03/2023 01:44

I've only known one and again it was a girl, Louanne.

Toandfroto · 13/03/2023 01:48

It’s Monday in Irish

MaireadMcSweeney · 13/03/2023 02:32

I know a female Luan.
Even if it is used as a boy's name somewhere the sound is made up of two female names Lou and Anne and definitely sounds feminine. I wouldn't for a boy.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2023 02:55

I know one.

It's a great name.

Can also be spelled Lughan. It refers to the ancient God Lugh, not really hero or warrior.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2023 02:57

Pronounced Lewin (approximately) as pps have pointed out

OverHereTryingToFigureItOut · 13/03/2023 02:57

I know an adult man Luan, he's lovely and I think it's a really nice name.

Oleaginus · 13/03/2023 05:06

CallieQ · 13/03/2023 00:58

Pick a normal name

Rude.

FYI- Monday in Irish is spelled Luain and pronounced lewin.

Luan is pronounced Loo- awn.
