Using a baby name with a bad meaning

We really like the name Lilith for a girl but when googling the meaning it's basically a demon in mythology. How much does this matter? I'm not massively bothered but don't want other people to judge so wondering if you think it's something you'd judge. Thanks!

I’ve never routinely looked up the meaning of names (apart from when naming my own), so I don’t think anyone will know.

I know a few children called Cameron. That means crooked nose!

if you love the name, use it. Also, if you look hard enough, you can find a negative connection with any name.

William - Willy
Richard - Dick
Violet - add ‘n’ and becomes Violent
Sabrina - Charlie’s Angel - cool name, Sabrina the teenage witch - witch
Bianca - Eastenders
etc

RosesAndHellebores · 24/02/2023 14:06

I wouldn’t.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2023 14:12

Or, Adam's first wife, made of the same clay not one of his ribs, kicked out of Eden for not being subservient to him? Sounds like the first feminist, no wonder she was demonised!Grin

I'm not sure many people would make that connection nowadays, probably just think it's a variant of Lily or Lillian, a nice sounding name.

I plan on using one! My girls’ name of choice is Mallory which means unfortunate/ill omened.

The meaning doesn’t bother me.

I’ve also seen similar questions about Amelia and Claudia for example, and look how popular they’ve been.
Lilith is lovely. If you like it, go for it!

BigglyBee · 24/02/2023 14:21

Wasn't Frazier Crane's wide in Cheers called Lilith?

WearyLady · 24/02/2023 14:21

Yep, the first feminist. According to one story Lilith refused to lie beneath Adam during sex believing that they were both equal.
I'd go with the name. It's one we were considering for our children if they'd been girls. Instead we had two boys.
Mind you, what do I know? Isis was another name we were considering for a girl. Imagine how that would have gone down in recent years?

Yes ... probably need to be of a certain age to make that connection, I wouldn't say that was a negative anyway.

WearyLady · 24/02/2023 14:22

Lilith was indeed the name of Frazier's wife. I loved her.

Soubriquet · 24/02/2023 14:23

I like Lilith. It’s a strong girls name. She wouldn’t bow to Adam and be subservient

evri1 · 24/02/2023 14:27

Ahh I was totally expecting a unanimous no but I love the idea of the first feminist and our first daughter is named after a very recognisable feminist. Both our families are very conservative Christian though... not sure they would be able to get their heads around it!

Just tell them that the story of Lilith is nowhere in the Bible, and that might make them happy!

Twoinapod · 24/02/2023 14:34

I love it, it’s on our name list. The meaning doesn’t bother me at all. It’s just a lovely name

She was my favourite character!

Yes, I liked her too. She was much more interesting than Frazier.
I wouldn't choose it, but only because my husband has a very strong accent, which makes it difficult for him to say "th" sounds. It would sound like Liliss when he said it.

IWIllDoItNowInAMinute · 24/02/2023 14:41

I’ve never really cared what names mean. I know my one DCs name meaning, but never looked up the others. I’ve never looked up the meaning of anyone else’s babies names either. Choose the name because you love it.

Keeptrying2 · 24/02/2023 15:01

My son is named after a character in a scary/paranormal type film. The child was possessed by the devil. As soon as we watched the film years ago we fell in love with the name and we just laughed off that it was from a horror film. We think Ds will just find it a funny story to tell when he is older. (It's not Damian by the way!)

MikeLitoriss · 24/02/2023 15:19

I 100% wanted to use Lilith but DH says it liliff and I couldn't deal with a lifetime of that from him or others 😂
But I still absolutely love it and think it's beautiful, feminine whilst also being strong!

Viviennemary · 24/02/2023 15:23

No I woildn't. She is a mythological demon.

freyamay74 · 24/02/2023 15:30

I wouldn't; I wanted names that have an interesting or beautiful meaning as well as loving how the name sounds too.

I really like the sound and look of Rebecca, but can't get past the meaning of it - a noose!

For me, it's not so much that other people would necessarily think about a name's meaning: it's the fact that I can't separate a word from its meaning and I'd always know that I'd chosen a name that meant something negative.

She also kidnaps and murders babies in the night so she’s not the nicest 😂

Says who? What babies would have been around for Adam's first wife to kidnap? (His sons did the murdering between themselves anyway).Grin

Use Lilith, and have the middle names Jezebel and Salome...

Or Delilah ... apparently that's quite popular nowadays.

LetMeSleepPleasex2 · 24/02/2023 16:49

In some traditions she’s the demon of stillbirth and neonatal death. Hard pass from me, despite loving the character in Frazier.
