(With Maris as a middle name rather than a part of the first name.)

Is it usable? I love the name Stella and I love the Virgin Mary.

Your second daughter could be Réalt na Mara. Same meaning as Stella Maris.

SabrinaEvolutuon · 24/02/2023 12:18

I stayed in a holiday cottage called that.

Needmorelego · 24/02/2023 12:23

@ReadersD1gest no I wouldn't expect it to be something she says to everyone and anyone - but sometimes conversations about names and why you are called such a name do come up in life from time to time.

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2023 12:54

How about Maris Piper?

Daisychained8 · 24/02/2023 16:32

Yes, I think it will be a nice thing for her too - it’s a really beautiful meaning! ☺️ I’d love it if my
name meant something like this!

Stella Maris is a just up the road from where I live, and to thousands of people would immediately make them think of the Isle of a man TT motorcycle races as it’s a famous part of the circuit.

Whether that would bother you or your child in the future is up to you. Personally I would think it’s pretty cool, but I am a massive bike fan.

Roy Moore in his commentary box at the Hairpin, talking about spectators getting excited on the first lap as riders approach Stella Maris was the first thing I thought of 😁

Viviennemary · 24/02/2023 16:39

Its awful. Sounds like a variety of potato.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 24/02/2023 17:00

Yes, awful and I thought of a potato too.

Stella Maris..Star of the sea..name of my Dad's boat

I'm sure I've seen quite a few boats with this name.

junebirthdaygirl · 24/02/2023 17:12

In lreland l associate it with nursing homes formerly run by nuns. I love Stella though..

ElizabethBest · 24/02/2023 17:14

It's a lovely name...... for a boat.

DogInATent · 24/02/2023 17:17

Sorry, my first thought was that it was a new blight-resistant potato variety and this was the gardening section. Or a cargo ship.

And that's before the kids figure out it's S&M.

CarolDunne · 24/02/2023 17:18

May be if I was a sailor as it means Star of the Sea

but if you lived in Dublin everyone would just think of dollymount beach

ShippingNews · 24/02/2023 17:23

My name is Stella and I've always loved it. My kids both tell me "You're a star, Mum" which I think is really cool. Go with it, your daughter will thank you.

We are Catholic and also as a family have a very strong connection to the sea (in terms of family history) so I thought it might be fitting. I also love Stella which she’d be know as day-to-day. I didn’t know it was a place either but to be honest it sounds pretty cool with the bike races 😁

This exactly the sort of family that SHOULD use the name. I heard the hymn in my head as soon as I read thread title. And day to day Stella is pretty and just unusual enough that you won't meet a lot of others her age.

ReadersD1gest · 24/02/2023 17:26

Go with it, your daughter will thank you.
Very strange assertion Confused

ClaraThePigeon · 24/02/2023 17:26

I don't find Stella a very attractive name and every time I hear it I want to say/scream it as Marlon Brando does here, and I haven't even seen the movie.

Never heard of it before and think it sounds lovely. No idea why ‘star of the sea’ would be a heavy name for a baby? Also she will hopefully be a grown up far longer than she’ll be a baby.

Stella Maris was the name of the convent school in the town I grew up in! Sounds odd to me as a person's name (mainly because I didn't realise Maris was a name, IYSWIM). Stella is lovely though. Underused.

It's the name of the old convent school in my town which has since been demolished and social housing built in its place 😊

Spanielsarepainless · 24/02/2023 18:34

It's the alternative name for the Apostleship of the Sea, the Catholic equivalent of Missions to Seafarers. I used to shout 'Stella Maris' at the end of the gangway, before a seaman would let me on board.

TheNinthLock · 24/02/2023 18:43

Octopusmittens · 24/02/2023 11:57

It’s lovely, but does sound rather like it should be the name of a rare Peony.

I would love to be named after a rare peony 😊

I like the name.

Ellmau · 24/02/2023 18:44

I like it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/02/2023 18:45

Stella Artois' organic sister brand

evtheria · 24/02/2023 18:45

While I love the name Stella, these 2 together sound like a cruise ship name to me, sorry!

purpledalmation · 24/02/2023 19:03

Sorry I thought it was a potato too. Not keen on the Maris.
