Too old fashioned?

What about Amala to make it a bit more modern? Pronounced Am-ar-la

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 20/02/2023 12:12

And I know MNers love a literary connection for a name. Pamela is the name of a novel by Samuel Richardson, from the 1750s I think. Poor Pamela doesn't have the easiest time in the novel though.

TrinnySmith · 20/02/2023 12:29

DSis is Pamela, DM swithered between Pamela and Brenda. She is 60.

HoleyShit · 20/02/2023 12:33

No it's awful.

Sugarfree23 · 20/02/2023 12:34

Nothing wrong with it. It will get shortened.
It sounds a little dated but that's not a reason not to use it. It must be due a come back.

Cherryblossoms85 · 20/02/2023 12:36

I wouldn't

Emmamoo89 · 20/02/2023 12:37

FinnRussell · 20/02/2023 11:53

Makes me think of Pamela Anderson. She's lovely but wouldn't be a name I'd choose. Too dated.

Agree with this

TheVanguardSix · 20/02/2023 12:46

I adore the name. Two very likeable and beautiful Pamelas spring to
mind: Anderson and Harriman (even Pamela Harriman’s death was glamorous! Swimming in pool at The Ritz Paris… the cerebral haemorrhage part reduces the glamour a bit but still! What a way to go.). Sorry. I’ve totally derailed.

I think Pamela is beautiful! 🥰

TheVanguardSix · 20/02/2023 12:47

People saying too dated? Please! In an age where girls are being named Maude and Nancy… 😳
Pamela deserves a fabulous comeback.

NewlyDiabeticMum · 20/02/2023 12:50

No, too dated and it reminds me Gavin and Stacey.

I don’t like Maude or Nancy either!

Barbara is awful. I feel sorry for any baby lumbered with that.

It's one generation to recent, names tend to come back when they are the great-grandmothers names - Nancy and Maude to me feel like the generation who named Pamela.

FrodisCapering · 20/02/2023 12:55

What about Paloma? It's similar if you're looking for alternatives.

StopFeckingFaffing · 20/02/2023 12:55

@TheVanguardSix Maud, Nancy, Elsie, Mabel etc are a different era to Pamela though. Hence my comment that Pamela is due a come back but not yet. The 'granny chic' names currently having a resurgence are those popular in those aged 80-100. Pamela is more popular in 55-75 age group.

Suzi888 · 20/02/2023 12:57

Baby Pammie!

I couldn’t. I think of Pam Anderson and she’s lovely but I think it’s dated.

MillenialAvocado · 20/02/2023 12:59

This is one I'd use as a middle name if I really liked it. I don't though, it's awful. Sorry.

jay55 · 20/02/2023 13:02

I went to school with a Pamela, it never suited.
Now as a middle aged Pam it still doesn't suit.

WhisperingAutistic · 20/02/2023 13:06

I think it's really cute!

tulipsunday · 20/02/2023 13:08

Also prefer Paloma as an alternative sounds more modern

an absolutely delightful cocktail too!

I really don’t like it. It sounds too Sheila, Barbara, Hilary for me. It sounds old-fashioned in a bad way.

This. Plus I just think Pamela Anderson

Lightninginabox · 20/02/2023 13:24

Gosh I love Pamela, Barbara and Hilary! Audrey too.

mrscumberbatch11 · 20/02/2023 13:24

I like it.

I know of two very wealthy, older sisters in my village. They are called Pamela and Jill and they are fabulous. In their 80s now, both widowed and now live together.

I also know one early 40s who goes by Pam or Pammy.

Also, one of the Mitford sisters was Pamela, I believe?

Willowtre1 · 20/02/2023 13:25

I think so yes, doesn't feel due a comeback yet

PinkSyCo · 20/02/2023 13:26

I just think baywatch.

Bigpinktrain · 20/02/2023 13:26

Yeah don’t like it at all for a child, I’m picturing a blonde woman with big boobs in a swimming costume 😅
