Too old fashioned?

I like it.

I know of two very wealthy, older sisters in my village. They are called Pamela and Jill and they are fabulous. In their 80s now, both widowed and now live together.

I also know one early 40s who goes by Pam or Pammy.

Also, one of the Mitford sisters was Pamela, I believe?

Yes on of the Mitford sisters was a Pamela. She was one of the less problematic ones. Managed not to fall in love with Hitler or end up in Holloway prison for fashy behaviour.

LulooLemon · 20/02/2023 13:36

I really like it.

Liptr · 20/02/2023 13:44

I once met a youngish Spanish-speaking Costa Rican Pamela who pronounced it Pam-ela, rather than “Pam-la” as it seems to be pronounced in the UK. I quite liked her pronunciation but I’m not sure that you could get people to pronounce it like that here.

CointreauVersial · 20/02/2023 13:50

Definitely due a comeback - probably when all the other names of the 40s and 50s make a comeback. I think it would be quite sweet for a small girl.

But I do just think of Gavin & Stacy .....PAMEL-AAAAAARH.

Geranium1984 · 20/02/2023 13:51

I immediately thought of Pamela Anderson but I do think it's a nice name

MissMarplesbag · 20/02/2023 14:58

Paloma as an alternative? Pamela is very dated and it's too soon to for it to come back.

Getthekernowlook · 20/02/2023 14:59

I love Pamela but I would say it Gavin and Stacey style

Pammmelllllaaaaaarrrrrr

😳

PaulaPaola · 20/02/2023 15:18

It means honey (mel) or sweetness. I think it's quite pretty but perhaps slightly too soon for mainstream appeal just yet.

I predict a rush of newborn girls with names like Pamela, Patricia, Barbara, Susan, Margaret, Hilary, Carol, Jean etc in the next decade - as the current generation of teenagers grow up and use their grandmothers' names for their own babies.

melaniepond · 20/02/2023 15:20

I think it's lovely. Strong and pretty at the same time.

stopringingme · 20/02/2023 15:27

I don't mind it but wouldn't like the inevitably of it being shortened to Pam.

I also thought of Pamela Anderson and Gavin and Stacey, I think that might be an issue too people thinking they are funny by calling her Pamella in a Smithy voice.

xprincessxjanetx · 21/02/2023 00:35

Not keen i'm afraid.

Gremlinsateit · 21/02/2023 01:27

It might depend on where you live too. I have no idea who Gavin, Stacey, or Smithy are. If you don’t like Pam it does lend itself to other nicknames - Ella as PP suggested, Mela, etc.

user1492757084 · 21/02/2023 06:48

Pamela is fine. Pam is good

peaceinourtime · 06/03/2023 05:55

Pamela is pretty name. Definitely due for a comeback.

HallieHufflepuff · 06/03/2023 06:10

I like this name, it was on my list. My husband didn't like it though.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/03/2023 09:56

Ooo I like it, it's retro. Pammy could be a cute NN has a similar feel to nicknames like Emmy and Immy.

Pamela sounds quite sophisticated like currently popular names such as Felicity and Penelope.

I imagine people would think dated initially but it could soon catch on. Yes I like it

Madeintowerhamlets · 06/03/2023 10:01

I like it because it’s not dated enough to be really popular so it is still unusual. I agree with pp’s that names like this will make a comeback in the next 10 years or so. You would be ahead of the curve!

junglemaze · 06/03/2023 10:01

I love it,it's a classic name and cute at the same time.it has a lovely sound, definitely due a comeback, and the two Pamela's that I know are really lovely girls so maybe that's why I love it 🥰

Fifthtimelucky · 06/03/2023 15:43

I know quite a few Pamelas. They are all a similar age to me (over 60) except for the one who is in her 90s, so to me it does sound very dated. It's a good name though.

Because all the ones I know all use Pam, the name Pamela makes me think of the novel, Pamela Anderson, and Pamela Stephenson.

CovertImage · 06/03/2023 16:22

Love Pamela

maddy68 · 06/03/2023 16:23

I love it. Yes it's old fashioned bit so are all the recent "new" names.

Pubesofsoberness · 06/03/2023 16:31

It's old but not old enough to be due a come back I don't think. Also its not very nice

drpet49 · 06/03/2023 16:32

SummaLuvin · 20/02/2023 12:08

It's dated, but beyond that I just don't think it's a nice name.

This plus I think of Pamela Anderson.

ririca · 06/03/2023 18:04

There's nothing particularly wrong with it but I'd say it's still too dated to gain mainstream popularity.
I also wonder how you feel about the nickname Pam or Pammy because that's what she will probably be called.

Kokeshi123 · 07/03/2023 04:02

Not keen. "Pam" (ham, spam, bam, cram, damn) is an awful nickname and it'll be very hard to avoid.

The original 18th century pronunciation, "pa-MEE-la" was nicer, and would lead to "Mela" as a short form. Maybe we need to let the name die out altogether and then revive it in a few decades with the old pronunciation.
