When we were expecting DS 3 years ago I floated the name Adair on here and many people said it reminded them of a particular Johnny who isn't necessarily what we'd want.
We absolutely love the name and are considering it for DS2. DH is Scottish and I'm half-Scottish. It's the Scottish form of Edgar. Could I have your thoughts?

Love it, it was on my list but I had girls!

MrsBunnyEars · 10/02/2023 21:30

I like it. Makes me think of Adair Turner (only time I’ve encountered it) but that’s probably very niche!

I also like Alastair but Adair thing avoids all the spelling issues.

Ihatethenewlook · 10/02/2023 21:30

I’m not keen. It does sound like a brand name of something. Is he being brought up in Scotland? My eldest is Welsh and I unfortunately picked a name that I wouldn’t have picked if I’d have known I was going to end up raising her in England. The actual name is fine in my case, but not the Welsh spelling.

rattlinbog · 10/02/2023 21:31

@Ihatethenewlook no but it's very phonetic

I don’t like it, but only because I know a family with Adair as their surname so I associate it with a second name rather than a first name.

I like it. I used to work for Adair Turner many moons ago, so it makes me think of him too @MrsBunnyEars ! But a classic, yet unusual, lovely sounding name.

tothesea · 10/02/2023 21:35

I think it’s lovely and would definitely have considered it for a name.

Laquila · 10/02/2023 21:37

Love it, also like Innes and Gregor.

I've known a few men called Dair. Adair works too. I like it.

ParentsTrapped · 10/02/2023 22:08

Sorry, it’s Mad Dog for me. And for everyone from NI I imagine. Which probably isn’t a problem unless you live there!

Jojobees · 10/02/2023 22:09

It’s my surname so not one I’d use🤣

Jdjdntbhh · 10/02/2023 22:16

It’s lovely

i love A strong Scottish name

PacificallyRequested · 10/02/2023 22:20

I'm Scottish and have never known or even heard of anyone called Adair. Sounds like "a dare" as in doing it for a dare, there are way nicer Scottish names out there.

Starllight · 10/02/2023 22:21

I’m Scottish and never heard of this name. Only ever as a last name (someone English).

Rhymes with affair, that was the first thing I thought when I read it

Pipsquiggle · 10/02/2023 22:25

It's OK, slightly pretentious but OK.

I am guessing it goes with your surname.

Babyenroute · 10/02/2023 22:27

Love it ! It is on my list if I have a second boy (I am Scottish)

I dont like it very much. Its just not a very attractive sounding name IMHO

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/02/2023 22:39

It’s a bit awkward to say.

I like Alistair though.

Nimbostratus100 · 10/02/2023 22:42

It is definitely very unusual and often a surname, that is true. But I do know a Scot with first name Adair.

My first thought was Red Adair, the guy that was famous for putting out oil rig fires (why my brain retains that info....)
I like it😊

rattlinbog · 10/02/2023 23:07

@Ifulikepinacoladas 😁 at least he's a goody!
