Adair

When we were expecting DS 3 years ago I floated the name Adair on here and many people said it reminded them of a particular Johnny who isn't necessarily what we'd want.
We absolutely love the name and are considering it for DS2. DH is Scottish and I'm half-Scottish. It's the Scottish form of Edgar. Could I have your thoughts?

Makes me think of Red Adair who used to put out fires in oil wells.

theyoungishman · 11/02/2023 00:19

It's quite a popular shop in Australia, selling bedding and soft furnishings

GetDownkeith · 11/02/2023 00:33

I've met two Scottish Adairs in my life and liked them both very much.
I actually love it.

octoberfarm · 11/02/2023 00:53

I absolutely love it. Such a strong and beautiful name.

CallieQ · 11/02/2023 01:14

Sounds like an airline

SenecaFallsRedux · 11/02/2023 01:26

I know two in the US, both women, and for one it was her mother's birth surname.

FadoFado · 11/02/2023 01:28

Reminds me of the village in Ireland called Adare.

FadoFado · 11/02/2023 01:28

and Mad Dog Adair

RJnomore1 · 11/02/2023 01:30

I’m Scottish, mad dog lives not far from me, and I never thought of it. I love it actually.

DPotter · 11/02/2023 01:32

I don't usually like surnames as first names - but this one I like!

Hoistupthemainsail · 11/02/2023 01:41

Don't really like it - it's the name of a homeware store chain in Australia!

LadyJ2023 · 11/02/2023 02:14

I dont like it at all. Nothing Scottish about it either. Sorry but I instantly thought it wasn't a British name tbh

Eyerollcentral · 11/02/2023 02:17

ParentsTrapped · 10/02/2023 22:08

Sorry, it’s Mad Dog for me. And for everyone from NI I imagine. Which probably isn’t a problem unless you live there!

Me too. And imagine some people in Scotland too. And I don’t know if it’s the mad dog connection that makes me think this but it’s really not a nice sounding name to me. Definite no.

Offleyhoo · 11/02/2023 02:21

Red Adair for me too, which is not a bad thing. Having said that I can't imagine calling a toddler Adair.

Mysmallgarden · 11/02/2023 02:26

It makes me think of the song 'Robin Adait' but I really like it.

StarsSand · 11/02/2023 02:54

Adair is the name of a massive linen and home wears chain in Australia.

Fleur405 · 11/02/2023 03:17

I’m Scottish and have never heard this as a first name. Honestly I thought it was an Irish surname. I think if you particularly wanted a link to your Scottish heritage there are a whole host of better options but if you just like it as a name then it’s fine.

AlwaysLatte · 11/02/2023 04:08

I've always disliked names that sound like something else - in this case I can't get past 'a dare'

WarriorsComeOutToPlayay · 11/02/2023 06:10

I haven’t heard it before. I don’t know if it’s because I am unfamiliar with it but it sounds like a random unfinished sound rather than a name if that makes sense.

UnleashMyPicasso · 11/02/2023 07:25

I like it, not sure it would work outside of Scotland

WombatBombat · 11/02/2023 07:34

I love it and have it on the list for poss DS2, however DH is Aussie so might have to strike it off!

LightHousePanda · 11/02/2023 07:39

I'm not familiar with it and I'm Scottish. Much prefer Alasdair.

Riapia · 11/02/2023 07:44

Nickname Red.

kirkandpetal · 11/02/2023 07:48

I'm Scottish and live in Scotland and the only Adairs I've come across are surnames.

That said, I think it would works, there are plenty of strong surnames that can be both a forename and surname....Cameron, Blair, Murray etc

I do love the name Alasdair though, it's slightly softer.

rattlinbog · 11/02/2023 08:50

Wow such mixed feelings!

Thanks all
