Thoughts on Meredith?

I really like it, not too common but not wildly out there either. My daughter struggles with “th” sounds so also considering Merida but I don’t think I like it as much. Nn maybe Miffy

P.S. Midge in Scotland is a common small fly that gives annoying bites, like a mini-mosquito...

My pronunciations of Meredith and Mererid are definitely correct, @Twoinapod .

I know a few Mererids and that is how they say it. I also know three Mareds, and that is how they say it. They are not from the same part of Wales so their pronunciation is not regional. All of them are Welsh speakers.

Out of curiosity, whereabouts in Wales are you from, and do you speak Welsh to some fluency? (i.e. not like my friend who is fluent but that is based on them knowing 2000 Welsh words Smile)

Roselilly36 · 04/01/2023 16:18

Lovely name

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2023 16:29

I definitely didn't butcher Mared. Mari is pronounced MARRy, Mared is MARR-ed. I also know several Maris and a few Marians who go by Mari as a diminutive.

As for Meredith:

@KirstenBlest As a (non-Welsh) English speaker, I'd pronounce Meredith MEH-reh-dith, with the emphasis on the first syllable and short middle syllable as @Twoinapod suggests.

To me that's the standard anglicised pronounciation, and I do hear it as soft sounding. Appreciate the origins in Welsh may differ!

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2023 16:47

@Twoinapod , I'm avoiding sorting out a pile of stuff. I'm only 'invested' because you say I butchered the pronunciations when I didn't. You're not the recent poster saying that the Welsh butcher the name Lois are you?

Call your baby what you like.

Wow. Some of these threads get very weird very quickly. Anyway I think Meredith is a beautiful name and it was on my list but my OH vetoed it (he was wrong!)

walkinthewoodstoday · 04/01/2023 16:59

Cool

purpledalmation · 04/01/2023 17:17

Love it

Yeahrightthen · 04/01/2023 17:23

I love Meredith, pretty but still “strong” sounding. I would call her Meredith though, not Miffy (unless you plan on sending her to a v v posh boarding school and move in uber-posh circles of course, toffs don’t mind having silly nicknames) 😂

AnneShirleysNewDress · 04/01/2023 17:29

I love it and wanted to call DD2 Meredith but DP vetoed it. Like @Fleur405 said, he was wrong!

Madamecastafiore · 04/01/2023 17:38

They call Meredith, in Grey's Anatomy, Mare which I think sounds dreadful.

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/01/2023 19:48

Sounds fine to me. on Grey's Meredith's NN is 'Mer'Not very original. I expect your older DD will come up with something cute.

LulooLemon · 04/01/2023 21:21

It's a lovely name.

Firebird83 · 04/01/2023 23:18

How about Meridy?

Fedoos · 06/01/2023 19:39

We named our DD Meredith so may be slightly biased but I love it, as much now as when we chose it. We thought she would eventually become Merry but it hasn't happened yet - we've never shortened it.

Also hoping I don't know @BethDuttonsTwin in real life! 🤣

Twoinapod · 07/01/2023 06:37

@Fedoos good to hear from someone who has a Meredith. I’m assuming that greys anatomy and Meredith Kercher links haven’t been an issue, judging by the comments on here you’d think it’s the be all and end all for that name 😂😂

Meredith is nice but Miffy?!! Miffy???!!

Rickandmortified100 · 07/01/2023 07:45

Miffy sounds like slang for a vagina

Sorry @Twoinapod, only just seen this.

No, neither of the things have ever been an issue at all.

I don't get the Meredith Grey thing. It seems like some people find the character annoying, but it's not like she's evil or anything. And anyway, there are more people who don't watch Grey's Anatomy than do who would never make a connection.

As for Meredith Kercher - what happened to her was absolutely horrific, but I don't see why something like that would put people off a name. She herself was just a normal person.

Ultimately, when our family and friends - people who we know well - hear the name Meredith now, all they associate it with is our lovely little girl. As for anyone else, and I don't mean this in a mean way, it doesn't really matter what they think.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 15/01/2023 21:21

It’s interesting so many mentions of Gray’s Anatomy whereas I think of the character from the US version of The Office 😂. I think though links to TV shows are unlikely to last for a baby born now.

Personally I much prefer Merida as Meredith sounds old fashioned and I don’t like ‘th’ sounds in names.

powershowerforanhour · 15/01/2023 21:21

It was on my shortlist. Beautiful name.
