Thoughts on Meredith?

I really like it, not too common but not wildly out there either. My daughter struggles with “th” sounds so also considering Merida but I don’t think I like it as much. Nn maybe Miffy

Depends on how you pronounce it. There's the anglicised Meredith where the stress is on the last syllable or the welsh where it's on the middle M'RED'dith.

I think it's a lovely name and ambisexual but v welsh.

Also why choose a name which immediately you shorten to a nickname?

Most names get shortened to a nickname, I don’t actually know many people that go by their full name day to day.

I loved the name Meredith with nn Merry for years and then met someone with that name who had a complete glass half empty attitude to life. This was emphasised by the way she sighed every time she introduced herself. It put me off using it.
DH would never have contemplated it anyway!

The stress on the middle syllable is the male pronunciation which goes with Meredudd spelling.
I pronounce it with the stress on the first syllable, never heard it with the stress on the last syllable. Me and DH are welsh and already have children with welsh names.

@Twoinapod Meredith is a fab name in my opinion. Go with Miffy if you love the nickname. I've never seen GA but I know about it and a friend loves it and her daughter's mn is Meredith.

I know about Meredith K story in 2007 (I think) but like you say there are loads of names associated with various stories and it wouldn't put me off a name that I liked. Also I like your sense of humour 👍

Whispering...How about nn Midge? 🤣🤣

I’ve heard of greys anatomy but I couldn’t name any characters. Only thing I’ve ever heard about it was that it was awful but that was years ago so didn’t think it would even be relevant or something people really remembered.

Don’t let other people see the Midge suggestion, there will be a mumsnet uprising 😂😂

I hated it when I first heard it on Grey's. Thought it was old sounding, but now with the influx of "ey" and "ie" names (Riley, Kiley, Maisie, Maddie etc) I'm starting to lean towards more traditional names now. So I love it.

mishmased · 04/01/2023 14:39

😂😂😂 I'll shut up now!

SchnauzerEyebrows · 04/01/2023 14:40

I love it 🥰

Kokeshi123 · 04/01/2023 14:45

I want to like it but can’t. There is something very grey and dowdy about it.

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2023 14:52

@Twoinapod , your spelling of the Welsh version is not right; it's Meredydd. It is definitely a boy's name traditionally - I know people with the name and they are men.

The Welsh pronunciation is Meh-RED-ith (ith as in with), the anglicised pronunciation of Meredith is MER-uh-dith (th like in thing)
I hear Meredith as Merry Death, which given the association with a murder is horrible.

The darkgreener site says that one girl was named Meredydd in 2007. No others since 1996. No Meredudds at all in that time.

There have been girl Merediths registered but no boys.

Meredith Kercher was murdered in 2007, and it was headline news for quite some time, so the name will make some people think of her.

Twoinapod · 04/01/2023 15:06

@KirstenBlest simple spelling mistake yes it’s meredydd as the male version, it isn’t much used much now though.

your anglicised pronunciation isn’t quite right. It’s more like MEH-re-dith. Emphasis on the beginning, short middle syllable. If you’re saying it anywhere close to Merry Death you are saying it incorrectly.

I was 17 in 2007 and have never heard of Meredith Kercher but even if I had it really wouldn’t bother me. As I said previously if we stopped using names linked with tragic circumstances we’d never use any.

not sure what the point of any of the other stuff you mentioned, I’m not interested in the Meredydd spelling, not naming a boy Meredith.

There is a child named Meredith in my distant family.
It is a nice name, although unfortunately it always makes me think of the murder victim - Meredith Kercher, but that maybe just me.

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2023 15:17

@Twoinapod , I posted
the anglicised pronunciation of Meredith is MER-uh-dith (th like in thing)

The 'merry death' is what I hear in my head, a bit like in my mind I read Theodore as 'the odour' Smile

Twoinapod · 04/01/2023 15:23

@KirstenBlest there shouldn’t be an uh sound in it. Perhaps your accent changes it but it’s not the correct pronunciation.

I really don’t like Theodore, and I can’t not see “the odour” now 😂😂

I liked Meredith but with the surname Grahmam I decided I’d best not. Too similar to Grey.

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2023 15:34

@Twoinapod , it's not just me:

Below is the UK transcription for 'meredith' :
Modern IPA: mɛ́rədɪθ
Traditional IPA: ˈmerədɪθ
3 syllables : "MERR" + "uh" + "dith"

I like it - I do watch Greys Anatomy and it wouldn't put me off.

There is a childrens series called Miffy & Friends - I think it's Dutch. My DD has a Miffy cuddly toy along with a few of the books. Again, not sure it would put me off! But just for info.

I think Meredith is a good name, with lots of options, and is much nicer than the similar Edith, which seems to be growing in popularity. I really like Edie as a shortening - perhaps something DD might choose as she grows up. Agree Miffy is cute for a little one though!

housemaus · 04/01/2023 15:36

I love it. I also love Midge as a nickname! Not keen on Miffy but nicknames tend to evolve more organically anyway so it might end up suiting her.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 04/01/2023 15:36

I really like Meredith but don't really like any of the likely shortenings of it (especially not
Merry)

RoseBucket · 04/01/2023 15:38

Love it!

I know two of very different ages, one known as Meri and the other Eddie (sounds like Eedee)

Flabbyghasted · 04/01/2023 15:43

I know 2, both under 5, in Wales and both shortened to Medi. Which is lovely.

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2023 15:48

@Twoinapod , Mared and Mererid are both pretty Welsh names.

I think both are forms of the name Margaret.

@ anyone who's interested Pronunciation of Mared is MARR-ed (Marr like in Marry)
Pronunciation of Mererid is approximately Merr-ERR-id (ERR like in Merry)

Twoinapod · 04/01/2023 16:07

@KirstenBlest nice names, again though pronunciation is off on mererid.

copying and pasting pronounciations from a website doesn’t make them correct. Both my daughters have names that people mispronounce, and have seen various pronunciation on websites. One is incredibly common and there is still various websites claiming different ways of saying it.

Welsh names are difficult to sound out in writing. But both Meredith and mererid are off by your versions and Mared is a bit butchered
