Balthazar, Melchior, Caspar - what do we think?

This came from a discussion with my mother. DS1 has a slightly unusual biblical name; she joked that my next child (I’m ten weeks pregnant) would be one of the wise men.

She said it as a joke - she hates the name I’ve chosen for my son even though it’s not that unusual - but I actually don’t think the wise men’s names are so terrible! I know a little Balthazar - his parents call him Z which I think is cute although it bears no resemblance to the name really.

What do you think of the three wise mens names? Which do you think is most usable?

I think Caspar is probably most useable but it’s the friendly ghost in my head…

I know a Balthazar who goes by Baz most of the time, his brother is
Melchior and it is never shortened. I like them all.

Cracking set of names for triplet boys.

I like Caspar and Melchior. Caspar is more usable but Melchior is more interesting and probably my favourite of the three. Balthazar is one of very few names where I can’t find a single good thing to say about it. Just thoroughly unappealing.

I imagine Balti as a nickname for Balthazar! 😆

I think Casper is fine and very usable.

I would expect somebody called Melchior or Balthazar to have been born outside the UK or to be from an ethnic minority community. I guess just because they've never been commonly used by white British people.

Caspar is really popular, certainly not unusual. I like it.

Sorry but Balthazar is truly awful, he will be that kid in Waitrose.

I know quite a few Kasper's, there is a large Polish community here and it appears a popular name. I work in a school and have never heard any negative comments on the name from other dc. I'm not sure many of the ones coming up to primary now know about the ghost tbh. The others are a bit ridiculous, sorry!
