Balthazar, Melchior, Caspar - what do we think?

This came from a discussion with my mother. DS1 has a slightly unusual biblical name; she joked that my next child (I’m ten weeks pregnant) would be one of the wise men.

She said it as a joke - she hates the name I’ve chosen for my son even though it’s not that unusual - but I actually don’t think the wise men’s names are so terrible! I know a little Balthazar - his parents call him Z which I think is cute although it bears no resemblance to the name really.

What do you think of the three wise mens names? Which do you think is most usable?

I think Caspar is probably most useable but it’s the friendly ghost in my head…

I don’t think the wise men are named in the Bible. Nor does it say how many there were.

Just thought I’d point that out.

A fair point, and they do traditionally have other names in other cultures.

Is there a 4th?

There's three, and the names came about to explain the chalk inscription C+M+B annually written over people's doorframe by groups of religious singers going around on Epiphany Day. Never mind it's actually Latin and short for Christus mansionem Benedict, or Christ bless this house. You can still get them to cone around where I live - it's organized by the Catholic parish and they take a small charitable contribution.

TheVanguardSix · 04/01/2023 17:54

Love the Wise Men’s names, especially Balthazar and Melchior.
How about Mordecai?
Isambard has always been the name I didn’t have the guts to use and
Scheherazade for a girl.
Love the name Malachy.
