Hogging the baby names board right now as have another one open- sorry! Wondered
a) people’s thoughts on Caspar
b) if they would actually use it
I find lots of names are mentioned a lot on mumsnet that people wouldn’t/don’t really use, so wondering if Caspar is theoretically nice but you would never go for it!

It's top of our boy's list atm, that spelling too 😊

Purplemonkeyandbananas · 15/12/2022 15:38

Casper misspelled? Boo! 👻

TheBirdintheCave · 15/12/2022 15:48

@Purplemonkeyandbananas But Caspar is the correct spelling 🤔

Purplemonkeyandbananas · 15/12/2022 15:50

Sorry but it doesn’t sound right to me! It’s like someone misspelled Casper. He will spend his lifetime correcting people that he is not a ghost

Caspar is the original spelling...

Caspar is the original spelling...

Exactly! 😊

toastofthetown · 15/12/2022 19:57

In fairness, both Casper and Caspar are derivations of the ancient Chaldean word gizbar, which then became Gaspar, so neither can claim to be the original spelling. Both are accepted English variants of the name, though Casper is more popular currently. Just preference as to which spelling you choose.

I absolutely love it. Would have called DS Caspar but couldn't because of our surname.

Borracha · 15/12/2022 20:08

I have a 4 year old Caspar and I love his name. I’ve had the odd adult say ‘oh like the ghost’ but it’s not a negative association and no one under the age of about 35 has a clue who Casper the friendly ghost is!

My Caspar often gets called Cas as well.

Sandysandwich · 15/12/2022 20:17

I think its a nice name but its ruined for me because I went to school with a Casper who had a lisp and he was bullied and called Cathy for years

CyrilSneer30 · 15/12/2022 20:19

I have a Caspar! Christmas Day baby (nearly) 6 years ago. It was due to be his middle name but as he decided to arrive on that day we decided we had to go full Christmas! Have only ever had one ghost comment (to my face anyway!) and he’s almost always Cas. I do have to admit it’s constantly spelt Casper by others though.

Laughingmole · 15/12/2022 20:50

I’ve just named my newborn Casper! I’ve only had positive comments about it! Go for it!

SalviaOfficinalis · 15/12/2022 20:54

I prefer Casper. Kids his age won’t care/know about the friendly ghost. And it’s not a bad association.

The Caspar spelling always makes me want to pronounce it Caspaaaaar.

CharitySchmarity · 15/12/2022 20:55

I like it but only spelt Caspar. I used to know a very nice little Swedish boy with that name and he is my first association - the second is probably the wise man from the Nativity (although I don't think it actually says what their names were in the Bible).

Ipanema01 · 15/12/2022 22:26

Love it. I have three boys and now having a girl but this and one other in my top two boys list. I only like this spelling :-) Cas for short is fab too

CassAndOats · 16/12/2022 11:07

I only like it spelt Caspar too. Hence we named DS Caspar. I call him Cass for short.
