Hogging the baby names board right now as have another one open- sorry! Wondered
a) people’s thoughts on Caspar
b) if they would actually use it
I find lots of names are mentioned a lot on mumsnet that people wouldn’t/don’t really use, so wondering if Caspar is theoretically nice but you would never go for it!

I thought friendly ghost. But also he’s a cute little friendly ghost, so not a bad connection there. it is a nice name, and as soo n as people know your baby they’ll forget all about ghosts.

FlamingJingleBells · 13/12/2022 20:43

The ghost.

toastofthetown · 13/12/2022 20:43

I like Caspar, though I personally wouldn't use it as it's getting too popular, and there are enough names I love for me to avoid the popular names. Almost every variant of Caspar is rising in popularity (Casp- starting names here for example). If you're worried about it being unusable though because of ghost references, I wouldn't worry. Adding together the spellings of Caspar I could quickly think of (Casper, Caspar, Kacper, Kasper, Kaspar), puts the name at 98th in the popularity charts, so lots of people are using it.

@GigiEm Ha- well I obviously commend you on a lovely name choice.

Thanks for those stats- still less common than others we like.

My husband works with someone called Caspar and everytime he mentions his name I chuckle inside. I don't think the association for me is ever going to go but that's just my own immaturity.

CassAndOats · 13/12/2022 20:49

I also have a Caspar!!!

CassAndOats · 13/12/2022 20:50

And it’s Casper the friendly ghost. Not Caspar.

Kanaloa · 13/12/2022 20:50

Friendly ghost. I know a Casimir called Cass for short which I think is nice.

YukoandHiro · 13/12/2022 20:50

Love it but prefer this spelling: Casper

Halburg27 · 13/12/2022 20:50

I like Caspar, prefer the spelling Casper unfortunately for me I cannot get past the friendly ghost connection but it is a lovely name.

Madamecastafiore · 13/12/2022 20:51

One in DDs class at school. Have never thought of the ghost thing. Just nice, slightly posh, not too weird boys name.

MolesOnPoles · 13/12/2022 20:52

It’s on my list for DC2 (probably with a K). I bet kids their own age won’t know anything about the ghost, and it’s a cute association even if it’s a bit random.

Its very commonly used by Scandinavian Muslims (apparently).

Snugglemonkey · 13/12/2022 21:00

I think it is lovely. I would not use it, but only because I have gone with Gaelic names for my children and would continue that if we had more. Otherwise I would definitely think about it.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/12/2022 21:22

We have an adult Caspar in the family. Invariably called Cas.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/12/2022 21:24

It’s getting quite popular.

It’s nice although I prefer Cassian

It’s very popular in Denmark full stop

It's lovely. It is DS's third name. He was born on Christmas day nearly 28 years ago. We preferred it to Melchior and Balthazar as we wanted something Christmassy. Nicholas was not an option.

mistletoemondays · 13/12/2022 21:45

I know someone with a Casper. It makes me think of the friendly ghost every time. I prefer Caspian, like Prince Caspian.

Underling564 · 13/12/2022 22:46

I have a teenage Caspar. We got a few ghost comments when he was born but never from children and more people recognise the Magi connection. Casper the ghost is spelt -er anyway and I think he is quite a cute wee ghostie so it never bothered us.

Bing4859 · 13/12/2022 22:56

I love it!! It was on my list if we had a boy. Any name has a connection, you just have to ignore it 😊

Nicholas wasn't an option but Melchior and Balthazar was? 😳

RosesAndHellebores · 15/12/2022 10:24

@DaisyDaisyDoesHe I think you need to read my post again. You have entirely misinterpreted it quite apart from the fact you have been rather rude.

squatternutbosh12 · 15/12/2022 11:09

I love the name Casper. I had a baby in August and Casper was quite high on our list. However, my husband (who also loves the name) pointed out that films are prime for a remake after about 30 years. It felt a little too plausible that there would be a Casper the friendly ghost comeback just when he’s at the age when kids would take the mick. The ghost link doesn’t bother ME, I love the film. But I wasn’t naming me, I was naming him, and I couldn’t guarantee HE wouldn’t mind the link, especially if it was remade and became very ‘in his face’. Maybe was a random/silly thing for me to think about but there we go :)
So we chose another name we love equally that (as far as I know!) doesn’t have any really obvious pop-culture associations.
