Emmanuel (manu) Löve it. Might have called ds2 it had it not been for ds1 being Samuel. Don't like Manu though - in Germany it's a common abbreviation of Manuela, which squillions of 20-35-year-olds are called.
Jesse - no
Elmo - no
Alfred (alfred) - Not entirely sure
Barnabas - don't really like

Ana - nice but prefer with 2 ns
Analia - no, people will wonder if you spelled Amalia wrong
Amelie - nice but prefer Amelia
Edie - don't like it much
Jane - lovely, and unusual these days
Mathilda (Tilly) - lovely - love the shortening Tilda too
Poppy - nice

3andnomore · 30/01/2008 16:14

Boys:

Emmanuel (manu)-'tis o.k.
Jesse-yes, really like this one
Elmo-nope
Alfred (alfred)-definately nope
Barnabas-hm...for me this is a dog or cat name
Jonah- really like it
how about:
Noah
Christian
Jonas

Girls:

Ana (our surname starts with a vowel though...)- is this the spanish version....do prefer with double n
Analia (as above)- erm...no...never mind that it starts with Anal, but also reminds me of the word genatalia, for some reason
Amelie (Milly)- Amelie really like, Ameila also very pretty...not keen on Milly
Edie-erm...nope
Jane- hm, bit plain
Mathilda (Tilly)-nope
Poppy- 'tis o.k.

How about:
Eleanor
Leah
Maria

Astrophe · 30/01/2008 17:17

so, Jonah, Jesse and Anna seem to be the favourites.

Wont be living in the UK, so 'ya geat jessie" etc wont apply (what does that even mean?)

I like Maria, not keen on Eleanor, and Leah is MIL, so thats out!

Noah is nice though.

HonoriaGlossop · 30/01/2008 19:10

Lucky you living out of the uk then! It's just a derogatory term thrown at boys who might be also labelled 'cissy', both old fashioned now anyway, just ignore me, I am showing my age!

I love Anna. I think it's classy and I like Nancy as a nickname

captainmummy · 30/01/2008 19:16

Don't like Manu - sounds like something Mork (& Mindy) would say. Jesse - is it pronouced Jessie? Or Jess? Either way, dont like. Like Alfie, Noah,Barney (Not barnabus - too poncey)
Ana - my secret name.! Amelie -no, milly-ok. Jane - boring, it's a middle name.
Mathilda - Matty or Tilly (or tilda) love it.
poppy OK

janeite · 30/01/2008 19:19

Don't like Manu but really like Emmanuel.

Don't like Jesse at all.

Like Barnabas but like Barney better.

Elmo - oh no, no!

Amelie - lovely

Poppy, Tilly, Edie - all lovely.

Don't like jane at all; ditto Analia.

janeite · 30/01/2008 19:22

Benedict is lovely.

pofaced · 30/01/2008 19:48

The thing you've got to remember is that not all names are equivalent which is something you forget when thinking about names for your own child: when I was expecting my first, my husband was keen on either Boris or Joseph if it was a boy: whatever you think of either (I had strong views on both), they're not the same: Joe is a fairly straightforward name while Boris has definite connotations. Another thing is, the name of your first determines subsequent names: if you call your first child an unusual name (Beelzebub say), you can't really call the second one John unless you want to exacerbate sibling tension. I've a silly name and my two older siblings have great "normal" names that don't indicate anything about them other than their sex while mine is just daft... think David, Jane and then Tallulah and you'll get my drift. Also, those Poppy/ Tilly/ Milly names are terribly twee by the time you get older (my 1st DD now 11). I offer you Mary or May as a fab girl's name that is pretty, old fashioned but strong and its bearer can make what she wants of her life.

mylovelymonster · 30/01/2008 19:52

Really like May.

FrannyandZooey · 30/01/2008 19:55

I like Edie the best

of the boys, not sure - they are all ok, I probably wouldn't pick Elmo because of the Sesame St character

I am not sure about Analia because of the first 4 letters. Ana to me is linked with anorexia -that's what they call it on anorexia sites

Sycamoretree · 30/01/2008 20:06

chankins · 30/01/2008 20:09

Catkin08 · 30/01/2008 20:10

BigBadMouse · 30/01/2008 20:45

I love the name Jesse for a boy. I'm glad you put it on your list as I wanted to consider it for DC3 but hubby said No Way! Now I can prove that most people like it .

One thing I might say though is to get a few male opinions on it too and see how they would feel having that name.

alfiesbabe · 30/01/2008 20:56

Jesse is great - love it.
Emmanuel is a beautiful name, but it would get abbreviated and tbh i can't think of any decent abbreviations. Manu? Manny? No!!
Elmo -

Tilly and Milly - totally overdone and terribly twee - she'll grow up and won't thank you for it!!
Love Edith (Edie) - pretty, dignified, unusual.
