Madison - for a girl

What are your thoughts on Madison for a girl?

It's one of the odd ones out that doesn't fit my usual style at all. In general I'm more into names like Sabrina, Isabella, Ruby, Agatha.

But I think it's sort of chic? I enjoy saying it. I'm not fond of Maddie so I'd probably only use it as a middle name. But I do really like it.

To me it has a cool business woman in the late 90s/early 00s sort of vibe.

I personally like it better than Madeline (which I say mad-eh-linn) but I guess not many people feel the same way?

All the ones I know are late teens early 20s so it may be slightly out of step with current names? Every single one of them is known as Maddi as well. Unfortunately you don't get to chose the NNs for your DC and Maddi is a very obvious one for most people with this name.

Madison means 'son of Maud/Matthew'. It's odd enough on a girl just for the 'son of' meaning but if your husband isn't called Matthew or you're not called Maud then that's just even weirder. To further compound things, it's also actually a surname, not a given name.

Seems very 1980s.

It does mean "son of" but Andrea means "man", Caroline means "man". That's not weird. Most meanings don't match. Or do you think that all Violets are actually flowers or that all Mallorys are unfortunate?

I quite like it . Most Madisons I know now are in their 30s . If you like it go with it .

It was very trendy to name little girls, Madison, in the 90's in the US. I personally know four and they were born from 1993-1997.

Their middle names are: Rose, Sylvie, Laura and Anne.

Only one of them is called, "Maddie" as a diminutive.

I think the point I was trying to make is that it's a name that will be associated with Gen Z when your LO will be Gen Alpha.

So it's a bit like being a Millennial and being named Donna.

Tacky as anything. Just awful.

Reminds me of the mermaid in Splash and of an avenue in New York. Neither is a good association. I really don't like it. But why would you care about that? I just don't like surname names and think there are loads of fabulous names out there you could use.

I only know one, she's 14 and her nn are Maddie & Mads

I love Maddison! I was a big fan of the film splash as a child. I like Maddeline too but I think Maddison is a bit simpler which I like

I know two Madison's, both early 30's. Neither's name gets shortened.

It seems dated 80/90s to me, like Ashley. More suburban than sophisticated.

How about Marianne, Maryam or Meredith?

I've always loved it due to Splash, but I do think it would have tricky to pull off and not just come across as a bit naff.

I like Addison for a girl as well. And it seems less contentious than Madison.
