Madison - for a girl

What are your thoughts on Madison for a girl?

It's one of the odd ones out that doesn't fit my usual style at all. In general I'm more into names like Sabrina, Isabella, Ruby, Agatha.

But I think it's sort of chic? I enjoy saying it. I'm not fond of Maddie so I'd probably only use it as a middle name. But I do really like it.

To me it has a cool business woman in the late 90s/early 00s sort of vibe.

I personally like it better than Madeline (which I say mad-eh-linn) but I guess not many people feel the same way?

I immediately think of Rocky Horror, "say! Do you guys know how to madison?"

So to me it's an old fashioned dance. Not a person's name.

DramaAlpaca · 07/11/2022 23:32

Leaving aside the meaning, I actually don't mind it and it's not my usual type of name.

FootballisLife · 07/11/2022 23:55

I like it! Far better than all the Elizabeth, Harriet, Penelope type suggestions you hear on here.

If people on here don't like it, it's usually a sign that you're a bit too cool! 😂

Fivebeanchilli · 08/11/2022 00:00

I really don't like it at all.
I don't know many and they are all older teens / early 20s.

TooHotToRamble · 08/11/2022 00:12

I love it!

DarkAndDusty · 08/11/2022 00:15

Dated and very American imo

mathanxiety · 08/11/2022 00:23

Not my taste but there's nothing objectively wrong with it imo.

It's a very well established girl name in tbe US.

Clearly a bit of a shock to some sensibilities here, but heyho.

Dreamingcats · 08/11/2022 08:31

I'm afraid I hate it, it sounds so masculine to me. I hate Addison too, which sounds like someone just forgot the M. It seems incomplete to me. And Addy makes me think of snakes for some reason.

I have a DD Madeleine (aged nearly 26) whose NN is Maddie and she used to get cross growing up as most people assumed it was short for Madison as that’s what EVERYBODY was called around here back then. Grin

GenerationSuper · 08/11/2022 09:20

I'm sorry to me it sounds like medicine. I much prefer Matilda, Martina, Lila and Maria / Mia.

VenusClapTrap · 08/11/2022 14:29

Not my cup of tea. It doesn’t say ‘chic’ to me at all, sorry. I usually like androgynous names, but not this one.

falllakes · 08/11/2022 14:33

It is a dated American name.
Most Americans I know wouldn't use it but as a Brit it probably has different vibes.

Hdaniels11 · 08/11/2022 14:35

@falllakes it's not dated here in the US it is only number 26 on the SSA name records, it's especially popular around the north east US

falllakes · 08/11/2022 14:42

Ah, I don't live in the NE.
It is has a slightly downmarket feel for want of a better description.
None of the American families I know where we live would use it, maybe it is a more suburban name?
But in the UK that may not transfer over.

allypike · 08/11/2022 19:40

Very very American name, not so much a bad thing. I'm 25 years old and grew up with many Madisons, all of them were called Madi/Maddy/Maddie for short

LadyApplejack · 08/11/2022 19:44

Absolutely awful, so naff

BailOutChapsGingersGornSquiffy · 08/11/2022 19:59

I know a 20 year old male Madison - he’s got an unusual surname and I always think it sounds like he should be a private detective in a 40’s black & white film!

Don’t like it for a girl though.
