What do you think of Ellie? I'm thinking about adding it to our list. My husband likes it too.

Is it better to use Eleanor? Or Elinor? Which do you prefer? Just Ellie?

Is it too boring or overused?

I was born in the 90s, slightly before the huge Ellie-wave (it seems to have been common in the early 2000s, according to statistics) so I didn't encounter very many. My husband loves it, but he is very much into names that have already gone a bit out of style. I guess because they are more familiar to him? Among his favourites are Emma, Chloe, Hayley and Kaylie.

To me Ellie is still lovely and fits in with current styles more than with styles of the 90s. I personally like it better than Ella but I'd rather have Eleanor or Elinor as a full form whereas my husband would rather use Ellie on its own.

I know an Ellie who is Elise properly. I love Eleanor though.

Wallywobbles · 26/10/2022 17:18

I love the French name Eliane. Not Elaine as most English people read it.

MichaelFabricantWig · 26/10/2022 17:18

I like Ellie but Eleanor I think is naff sorry

FennelAndOnions · 26/10/2022 17:18

I love Elise.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 26/10/2022 17:19

I've never heard the name Kaylie before, and hope I never hear it again.

Ellie is fine, though (I'd use Eleanor/Elinor on the bc).

napody · 26/10/2022 17:20

Don't think anyone has suggested Ellen yet? I love it, wish I'd used it.

IStandWithMaya · 26/10/2022 17:20

Eleanor or Elise (Eh-leeze)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/10/2022 18:50

Lovely sweet name. I think it sounds very refreshing now. I've not heard of an Ellie in years. Its fine as a standalone name. However if you do want a fuller name on her BC she doesn't have to be Eleanor she could Elizabeth
Elspeth. Elissa. Eloise.

lillila · 26/10/2022 18:56

Elena?

Honestly Ellie is a total bore of a name to me. It’s so bland, overused, uninspired and unimaginative. That goes for pretty much all El- names.

I agree. To me it's up there with one of the most boring names!

Dassams · 26/10/2022 19:15

Where do you live? Ellie has been soo popular for the past 15-20 years. I've got older teens and they've come across loads of Ellies/Eleanors!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/10/2022 19:34

Im in Liverpool, Dassams.

Energeticenoch · 26/10/2022 19:45

I love it but absolutely not hyphenated with anything

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2022 19:46

Nope, not for me. It has to be one of the most insubstantial, bland names ever. And there are so many of them.

FourChimneys · 26/10/2022 19:54

DS has a friend called Ellie who has Ellen on her birth certificate. I think it's a pretty name but I don't like Eleanor.

shortfrench · 26/10/2022 19:55

Prefer Eleanor, Ele

Anonymouslyposting · 26/10/2022 20:11

I really like it. I’d go with Eleanor.

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/10/2022 21:00

There are a billion of them..

it’s nice as nn a nn, but I would call her Eleanor / Ellen / Helen/a / Elowen / Elizabeth as a full name so she has options. Ellie is a bit nursery also.

Billylilly · 28/10/2022 12:23

I love the name Ellie (or Elle). When have you ever met someone and thought, oh wow, you have such a boring name? Never!!

MrsJordan · 28/10/2022 12:27

I'm an Ellie, birth certificate Is Elise but only people at work call me Elise. I've used Elise alot more since secondary school but still know as Ellie to most. So obviously biased but Ellie is a cool name 😊

Dreamingcats · 28/10/2022 12:57

I love Eleanor but unfortunately there are so many popular names starting with El and shortened to Ellie that they all blend together. So personally not for me. But our opinions don't really matter!

Malfi · 28/10/2022 14:26

I like Eleanor and Ellen much more, but Ellie is a bit bland to me, though completely fine. I know a few Ellies and several in their 20s, as well as older ones - but the older ones are all Eleanor.

Alice362 · 31/10/2022 10:06

Love it, If I had a girl her name would be Ellie.

MassiveSalad22 · 31/10/2022 14:59

Loooooooads of current new mums called Ellie. I have a name which is popular at the mo for babies. My daughter (6mo) has an 80s name. Don’t overthink it! Ellie is nice and I don’t know a single little one. I like Elle personally.

Penguinsaregreat · 31/10/2022 17:52

I think Eleanor is far nicer.
There are lots of Ellie’s but if you don’t mind that then there is nothing to stop you using it.
I think Eleanor has a more sophisticated sound to it.
