What do you think of Ellie? I'm thinking about adding it to our list. My husband likes it too.

Is it better to use Eleanor? Or Elinor? Which do you prefer? Just Ellie?

Is it too boring or overused?

I was born in the 90s, slightly before the huge Ellie-wave (it seems to have been common in the early 2000s, according to statistics) so I didn't encounter very many. My husband loves it, but he is very much into names that have already gone a bit out of style. I guess because they are more familiar to him? Among his favourites are Emma, Chloe, Hayley and Kaylie.

To me Ellie is still lovely and fits in with current styles more than with styles of the 90s. I personally like it better than Ella but I'd rather have Eleanor or Elinor as a full form whereas my husband would rather use Ellie on its own.

It's really boring. But it's inoffensive and nobody's going to make fun of it or not know how to pronounce it.

Whatever you chose will likely go out of style. That's just life!

If you choose a name that is never wildly popular, that's not the case. Ellies are everywhere, and it peaked 20 years ago.

Ellie is cute, but my goodness there are thousands and thousands of them.

I would put a longer name on the birth certificate, Ella, Eleanor (classic and elegant), Elinor, Elise, Eloise, Ellen, Elena etc would all be lovely.

It's the new Emma or Sophie. Nice name but absolutely everywhere.

Absolutely unlikely if you choose a name outside the top 250.

I prefer Elena to Eleanor, can be pronounced ell-an-er or e-lain-er . Ellie is fine as a shortened name, not a fan of it by itself

Have you considered Eloise, nn Ellie?

PixieJeanne · 15/01/2023 23:54

I'm also considering this name, short for Eliana and think its beautiful with a lovely meaning. I was very surprised to find out how much people disliked it on Mumsnet and don't think it's a reflection of real life, depending on where you live of course. Most people complain its too 'common' yet I haven't met a single child called Ellie in about 10 years! Most chuldren we know have names like Lilly, Isabelle, Olivia, Amelia, Ruby, Evie ec

Not a fan of any of those I love Elise
