Thoughts on Marti/Martie for a girl

Hi

I'm just wondering how people think about the name Martie for a girl? I haven't really seen it on any of these threads - one the one hand that's a good thing because we don't want a super popular name, on the other hand I'm concerned that means there is something very wrong with it.

Many of the females in my maternal line have names derived from Martha, but no one actually has Martha on their birth certificates, so that's where the idea for Martie came from. Generally the females in my family only have the name they are being called as the name on the birth certificate.

Thanks!!

I’m not keen. I automatically think “McFly”. Sorry.

PeekAtYou · 07/09/2022 11:18

I think Marty McFly (male) too.

PineappleWilson · 07/09/2022 11:20

I like it, but maybe I'm a bit older. Marty Cane was a singer / actress in the 70s / 80s. I do wonder if people will mistake it for Martine, which I like less, though.

ScoobyDoNot · 07/09/2022 11:24

Marni(e) is a much nicer name for a girl.

sarahc336 · 07/09/2022 11:29

Makes me think of martini x

Same here!

I would assume Martie's full name was Martina.

MrsU2022 · 07/09/2022 11:32

I like it!

Isn't there a Martie in Grease?!

JustMaggie · 07/09/2022 11:33

I like it too!

Ship · 07/09/2022 11:33

I think of the one in grease too. I would think it was a nn for martine. But it could be Martha on birth certificate, nn martie

KirstenBlest · 07/09/2022 12:24

Marti Caine, Marty McFly. Marta, Martine and Martina are all ok, and Martha is nice

Cheeselog · 07/09/2022 13:20

It sounds too unfinished to go on the BC IMO but cute nn for Martina which I love. If no one in the family is called Martha though why not just use that?

BabyDW · 07/09/2022 13:54

Thanks for all the feedback!

I am very relieved to see that at least everyone doesn't think it's awful! When I couldn't find it on any of the mumnet threads I thought we might be completely crazy for considering it.

Ooh no.

It’s like calling your daughter Harry or Jackie

Daisybuttercup12345 · 07/09/2022 23:09

Sounds like a boys name.
Martini.
Smartie Martie.
I really wouldn't use it.

Hobbesmanc · 09/09/2022 15:24

Marty Maraschino! One of the Pink Ladies

ChagSameachDoreen · 09/09/2022 18:29

"Martie Maraschino. Like the cherry."

Celynfour · 09/09/2022 18:29

I have a Martha
She is often called Marty by class family and friends . People have often commented what a pretty name it is .

Celynfour · 09/09/2022 18:29

Close not class !

GuerlainHo · 09/09/2022 18:31

No. I don’t like it

sandes · 10/09/2022 18:54

I like it!

carefullycourageous · 10/09/2022 18:55

Like Marti Pellow from WetWetWet? It's a no from me.

DemBonesDemBones · 10/09/2022 19:08

I love it ❤️

Caroffee · 10/09/2022 19:12

Sorry, but I'm not keen on it. I grew up with a tomboy Marti who was regularly called 'Martin' by supply teachers. I guess it's good gender-neutral choice if that's what you're looking for.

I would assume Martie's full name was Martina.

Yeah the one who loses her diamanté in her soup and flirts with the presenter at the dance.
