Partner not sure on baby name

Partner and I are having our first child, I've always known what I would call my baby if I had a boy, in fact I have quite a few names! All of which my partner has liked, however we are having a girl, we've been struggling to agree on baby girl names, but the only girl's name I really like is 'Harlow', as soon as I told my partner the name he kind of pulled a face, like a 'really?' face. I don't think it's a bad name at all,

What does everyone else think?

Harlow is a commuter town in Essex....

I don't particularly like it. It's a place name, which sometimes works, but not when it's the name of an economically poor English town. It's alternative meaning is 'rocky hill'. Also boring.

Why not Harley?

Dreamingcats · 23/08/2022 22:40

I'm sorry but I agree with your partner. It just makes me think of the town, or harlot.

Willow?
Margot?
Hallie?

NeedMoMoney · 23/08/2022 22:42

I can't go with willow as I have a nice called willow ☺️ I was thinking maybe harley but i just think of Harley Quinn from joker 🙈

I'm afraid I agree with your partner. Also makes me think it the place, which isn't great. I really like Willow too- shame it has already been taken.

I was in the same boat as you, i had a few boys names I like but don't really have any girls names (...apart from Willow 😄). Thankfully I had a DS so I had a few options to pick from!

Snugglemonkey · 23/08/2022 23:06

I don't like Harlow. I wouldn't go with any name connected to a location and certainly not a grim one.

What is it you like about Harlow? That it is quite neutral rather than overly girly? What about Quinn or Arden?

WitTanks · 23/08/2022 23:11

What about Harper instead? Quite similar but not a town name

Pemba · 23/08/2022 23:22

I am sorry, I am with your partner on this. It's not great. A town which is not particularly nice apparently, also sounds a bit like 'harlot'.

I don't like surnames and town names as children's first names in general, especially for girls. There are so many lovely girls names out there!

France98 · 23/08/2022 23:26

I love the name Harlow! Almost called my youngest it.

I don't live near Harlow and very unlikely to ever go. Wouldn't give it a second's thought! 😂

KeyErro · 23/08/2022 23:30

Terrible name for a child.
(I live near Harlow)

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2022 23:30

It's not great, tbh.

How about Marlowe? It's another town name, but (sorry Harlow) probably a bit posher.

Bottom line, you both need to like the name.

NeedMoMoney · 23/08/2022 23:56

I saw the name on an article I was reading online a while ago and thought it sounded pretty, when we were thinking of names it popped into my head again, I didn't realise it was a name of a town, and a shitty town as it's been pointed out! 😄 It has also popped up on baby name forums but I think the names mainly been used in America so thought I would have a unique'ish' name over here.

Your partner is right. What names does he like?

Feetache · 24/08/2022 00:07

I know a Harlow and quite like it

VanillaIce1 · 24/08/2022 00:11

Nothing wrong with Harlow. I like it.

Kite22 · 24/08/2022 00:15

Your partner is right.

Keep looking until you find one you both love, or at least, you both like.

MalloryMae · 24/08/2022 00:16

I really like it! I wouldn't be bothered by it being the name of a town but if you are could you change the spelling? Harlo/Harloe?

Other baby girl names I like:

Marley
Marnie
Orla
Raea (Ray-a/Ry-a)
Lyla
Clea

Topseyt123 · 24/08/2022 02:24

No. Sorry, but I agree with your partner.

Harlow is a rather ugly commuter town in Essex. Not that far from me although I don't actually live in it.

Don't saddle your child with such a name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/08/2022 02:51

It's not a girl's name OP it's a town in Essex. Don't call your daughter this, it's really quite grim.

Buy a baby names book and you can both do shortlists of actual names.

Adding a younique spelling to Harlow is not an improvement..

NeedMoMoney · 24/08/2022 07:51

It is a also a name as it has been in quite a few baby name forums as I put in one of my posts.

McAvennie · 24/08/2022 07:54

Rowan?

VeridicalVagabond · 24/08/2022 08:01

Harlow's a grotty town, seems a bit mean to give a little girl a name that makes a lot of people think "grim". It'd be like calling a kid Hull or Barnsley.

UnityO · 24/08/2022 08:08

It's a grim town in Essex so I wouldn't use it for a baby!

Harper?
Harriet?
Lois?
Blythe?
Honor?
Nina?

girlmom21 · 24/08/2022 08:10

If he doesn't like it it wouldn't even matter if we all did.

What is it you like about the name?
What about Harper or Marley?

SallyWD · 24/08/2022 08:14

I agree with your partner. It's not a good name! I love Orla.
