Partner not sure on baby name

Partner and I are having our first child, I've always known what I would call my baby if I had a boy, in fact I have quite a few names! All of which my partner has liked, however we are having a girl, we've been struggling to agree on baby girl names, but the only girl's name I really like is 'Harlow', as soon as I told my partner the name he kind of pulled a face, like a 'really?' face. I don't think it's a bad name at all,

What does everyone else think?

Marlowe isn't a place name, but Marlow is.

Harlow is not a very nice town, and the name will sound like Arlo in many accents.

Pick a sensible name, your child will need to live with it.

loislovesstewie · 24/08/2022 08:29

Please NOT Harlow, it makes me think of the joke about Jean Harlow not knowing how to pronounce Margot , she sounded the 't'. Lady Asquith who was known as Margot said ' the t is silent as in harlot' .

Of course, Lois is a really good name!

MushroomQueen · 24/08/2022 11:25

Sorry I was born in Harlow- land of roundabouts is what I think of. Not a babies name for me but not my baby so... you need to see if he hates it or just needs time to adjust

dogatetheremote · 24/08/2022 12:09

Not Harlow.

Harper
Holly
Hailey or Haile
Hannah
Hazel
Hope
Florence
Seren
Piper
Quinn
Luna

RedRobyn2021 · 24/08/2022 12:22

Have you visited Harlow before? It's not a very nice place. If your partner isn't keen I would keep searching. I had a name I was set on for my daughter but her dad was not feeling it, we found a new name 🤷🏻‍♀️

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 24/08/2022 12:45

What about Margot? Similar sound and a lovely classy name.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/08/2022 13:01

Harlow is awful and down market

OctopusBreath · 24/08/2022 13:08

Be careful with the baby name sites OP, especially the American ones. They will basically pluck any word from languages they don't speak/cultures they don't know, and say it's a name. I found the Welsh word for death on so many of them- it is absolutely not a name, and not a kind gesture to saddle a child with a name like that.

DacwMamYnDwad · 24/08/2022 13:42

I agree with @OctopusBreath , the Welsh baby name sites are unreliable. They get the gender wrong, include Irish names, and include random nouns like wheel, wheelbarrow and bird, and they get the spellings wrong.

IsThePopeCatholic · 24/08/2022 13:45

No. I think it sounds weird.

Enko · 24/08/2022 13:49

I dont like it. Agree with your partner. What suggestions does partner have?

noclothesinbed · 24/08/2022 13:58

Hallie
Hattie
Harper
Not keen on Harlow

TeenDivided · 24/08/2022 14:02

Willow or Hayley.

If you are going to use Harlow, you might as well use Slough.

loislovesstewie · 24/08/2022 15:53

And insist that Siân is said See Anne ! @DacwMamYnDwad

Milkand2sugarsplease · 24/08/2022 16:21

Surely it doesn't matter what we all think of it? It's you and DH that have to like it and if one of you doesn't then it's a none starter?

Firty · 24/08/2022 16:41

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/08/2022 02:52

Adding a younique spelling to Harlow is not an improvement..

Harlow is not a good name OP. Agree with this poster also that changing the spelling makes it worse, not better. Teenage boys would joke “Harlow the Ho” or call her “Harlot” etc.

There are lots of other names in the world, bin this one and move on.

DacwMamYnDwad · 24/08/2022 16:41

@loislovesstewie , don't get me started on the welsh baby name threads on here. Usually full of middle-aged names or bonkers suggestions, or mispronunciations, and no, Siân isn't pronounced See-Anne or Sharne.

Not sure about Slough as a first name, @TeenDivided , how about Crawley?

Cheeselog · 24/08/2022 16:54

Yes Harlow is awful, as is Marlow (albeit Marlow is a bit naicer).

What about:
Chloe
Hannah
Eloise
Margot
Holly
Noelle
Annie
Orla

loislovesstewie · 24/08/2022 17:14

I'm from the West Country and went to school with a lot of Welsh girls, or girl's with Welsh parents, a lot of Welsh names are familiar to me and I cringe when I hear people unable to say them. The same goes for Irish names , I've heard some howlers!!!

loislovesstewie · 24/08/2022 17:15

Didn't Sarah Palin call her daughter Bristol? She had clearly never heard Cockney rhyming slang!

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 24/08/2022 17:17

If your partner's not keen then find another name.

Appleplum · 24/08/2022 18:51

If you're looking for something more masculine/gender neutral OP then what about Morgan? I feel like that has similar vibes to Harlow without the connections

S25 · 30/09/2022 13:46

As others have said it’s a commuter town so I’d be inclined to agree with your OH and keep looking!

Harper has a similar sound if that’s what it is you like about the name?
