How very dare you @whataloadabullocks! Grin

I love gemstone names (obviously). My granny was a Ruby.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/08/2022 21:23

I think it will be a US thing because of LV. Names will always have different associations in different cultures.

There are few Sapphires in the UK so it doesn’t have any rep. don’t worry about it

You could always return a message that you think flower names are wet.. (not really)

If you are thinking of another gem stone name I would stay off Jade. Emerald is nice.

Meredusoleil · 13/08/2022 21:37

It's funny people are saying Emerald would be a good match for Sapphire because my kids named dh's car Saffy (as its dark blue) and my previous car Emmy (as it was dark green) 😉

Chakraleaf · 13/08/2022 21:43

I have 3 daughters all with gemstone names.

ImAvingOops · 13/08/2022 21:48

I'd shame her by letting her know this conversation has come back to you via your daughter and that she's caused great upset yo your child.
Agree with pp that someone whose child is called Lilly May is in no position to judge!

midsomermurderess · 13/08/2022 21:52

Ooh, Marv. An illiterate cunt turns up to sneer at people's name choices. Go, Netmums!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 13/08/2022 22:03

Sapphire is a beautiful name.
Other jewel options:
Amethyst
Amber
Citrine
Ebony
Morgana (morganite - a beautiful pale pink stone)
Topaz
Peri (peridot). Actress Peri Gilpin starred in the sitcom Frasier.

ivebeencalledworse · 13/08/2022 23:01

It reminds me of Absolutely Fabulous with Jenifer Saunders, her daughter was called Saffy. The characters were very middle class. Also, Jewel.

that woman just sounds like a bitch looking to insult others, usually because they feel down about their own lives.

Franca123 · 13/08/2022 23:15

Tell her to watch keeping up appearances then ask her whether she thinks having three daughters with flower names is 'chavvy'. I'm always curious why people know what strippers are called. On the bright side, you know to avoid her now.

FlimFlam2 · 13/08/2022 23:58

I love gemstone names too. I think Crystal (spelled any way) is especially beautiful. Some people will always have a negative association with a name, nothing to be done about it.

SnottyLottie · 14/08/2022 09:39

Wasn’t this a joke from Being Human? George and Nina are talking about baby names and George suggests Sapphire. Nina scoffs and says it’s a stripper name and then George snarks it was his Grandmother’s name 😆

Wonder if she thinks my son’s name, Jasper, is chavvy considering it’s a gem name. Usually I get called pretentious for giving my child a ‘posh’ name 🙄🤣

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/08/2022 09:45

Where I live any name with hyphen -May/Mae or hyphen -Rose would be associated with the lower socioeconomic group. I’m way out of touch probably though, and at the end of the day your daughter is person who will be judged on her actions not her name

Titsflyingsouth · 14/08/2022 10:05

You can't please anyone on Mumsnet, OP. My son has a very 'standard' boys name that's been around for decades and last month there was a whole wall of posts from people saying it was hideous and 'bleurgh'.

pinklavenders · 14/08/2022 11:45

plus her daughters are lily-may , poppy and rosie lol

Op, you seem to sneering at your friend's daughter's names.

Personally I don't like Sapphire but why should we all share the same tastes?

Hobbesmanc · 14/08/2022 12:41

I think Saffie on Ab Fab was Saffron.

I love the look of Topaz or Amethyst for unusual names. I like Copper for a boy but it was always used for red haired kids when I was a school.

mogwa · 15/08/2022 17:52

OP, unusual names in general often get a polarised reaction. People either love them or hate them. But I don't think there's anything wrong with gemstone names. I have a relative named Emerald who is in her 50s and as far as I know, she's never had any problems with her name.

I would be livid if a parent made a comment like that about my daughter's name. It is incredibly rude for an adult to mock a child's name in front of her school friends.

3peassuit · 15/08/2022 18:01

There are some lovely gem names. I had a Great Aunt Ruby. She served as a nurse in WW1. I think it rude to label people chavvy because some ignorant people disapprove of their names.

MissVantaBlack · 15/08/2022 18:10

I think Sapphire is a beautiful, unusual name, and it would never have crossed my mind to think of strippers or chavs.

And think of how popular Esme is - but that's short for Esmeralda (Spanish for Emerald). Most people consider it to be a classic name and not remotely chavvy. Ignore your friend - she's talking rubbish.

pinklavenders · 15/08/2022 18:14

There are some lovely gemstone names and some not so lovely ones. You really can't generalise imo.

Squirrelsnut · 15/08/2022 18:35

People are allowed opinions about names, but to go out of your way to put down someone's choice with a classist insult is the epitome of low-class.
So the joke's on her.

viques · 15/08/2022 18:38

My mum had a gemstone name. She wasn’t a stripper, though to be fair she had the legs and figure for it.

babyjellyfish · 16/08/2022 09:13

If she's American and she's called her children Lily-May, Poppy and Rosie and used the word "chav", it sounds like she's trying very hard to blend in with the English middle classes.

I assume someone told her hyphenated names are looked down on here between the births of her first and second daughters.

I like Sapphire.
