Tell her it's the name of a character from the nineteenth-century operetta based on the Aesthetic Movement, Gilbert & Sullivan's Patience.

(Absolutely true. You don't need to mention that it's a piss-take of said Movement...Grin)

Nice to have a more unusual name then be the 25th Lily-May in your year.

I’d have thought more Americans would associate it with the Saphira in the bible, who fell dead at St Peter’s feet after she and her husband were caught witholding funds from the early Christians’ communal purse!

I thought you were asking for suggestions. My first thought was Sapphire or Jade.

But, seeing as you’re not… what does it matter what that random woman thinks of your daughter’s name? You like it, your daughter likes it. As you’ve said, that’s the main thing. Ignore her

I have no problem with jewel names, but your OP reads like you’re sneering back at her daughters’ names so I’m not sure you’ve got the moral high ground here.

No not at all im saying why is having mutiple flower names acceptable but gemstone are not so Pairing lily and poppy is ok but Sapphire and jade is not .That was my point .

It was more to ask about gemstones as sibling names and others peples thoughts on it as i would never of thought of Jade but i like it now she said it and im asking why is it chavy to put them together i dont care that she said it i just didnt think pairing them seemed chavy i was thinking Eliza Zara or Georgia for a girl but i like like jade now

I love the name Saffie.

Loved it ever since I watched Ab Fab in my teens!

And sapphire is beautiful and totally the opposite of what I'd have thought people would call Chavy.

I also agree Jade is a beautiful name (for a boy or girl if you need it!)

I also like Pearl and Opal.

I love gemstone names. I think people who associate them with strippers are a bit sleazy and stuck in the 80s/90s. And no one who uses the term chavvy is worth listening to. Sapphires are a lovely stone.

Yes. Me.

I wouldn't consider Jade, Amber or Ruby, which DH liked because they were the names on cards in Moss Side phone boxes back in the day. They will always be prostitute names in my mind.

But then tattoos were for sailors and prostitutes then too.

I'm sleazy because I have watched movies with those names? For example Hustlers with Jennifer Lopez? That's a new movie

I can't believe someone with a child called lily-may called your childs name chavvy Grin.

Martin Lewis - the money expert guy - named his daughter Sapphire - I think it’s a lovely name

itwasntmetho · 13/08/2022 20:09

Your daughters name is lovely, the flower names are nice too but IMO (which counts for nothing) naming kids as a set is a bit shit If I had a Poppy I could not have a Rose too. Same for first initials deliberately.

Beamur · 13/08/2022 20:10

My Mum absolutely loved gemstone names but my Dad didn't. I was very nearly called Opal.
Ruby is massively popular and not at all stigmatised. But there aren't many as popular as this, despite several more to choose from - coral, crystal, emerald, etc.
It is curious that flower names have been very popular for years and I would agree that people are a bit sniffy about gem names.

optimistic40 · 13/08/2022 20:11

Sapphire is such a beautiful name.

BoxedOut · 13/08/2022 20:13

This isn't what you're asking, but I'd say avoid anyone who thinks it's ok to use the term "chav". It's not ok at all.

Trinity65 · 13/08/2022 20:14

Awww don't worry OP

Back in the 1980s when I was a teen there was a TV Show called Sapphire and Steel and very good it was too . I liked the name Sapphire back then and that was long before CHAVs became a thing .

Its a pretty name.

Throwawaytoday · 13/08/2022 20:15

@BoxedOut I agree regarding the word 'chav' it's only ever used in the pejorative. It's blatant clasism.

*classism

SunshineLoving · 13/08/2022 20:22

Just ignore. Most people have opinions on names. You chose a name you love. I like the name too.

If you were to call your second child after another gemstone then go for it. I personally wouldn't as I think it takes away from your first daughter's name.

ColouringPencils · 13/08/2022 20:25

It's a lovely name and I don't think it has chavvy associations. More importantly that woman was incredibly rude talking about you in front of your daughter's friends. What a twat. She's shown who is the one with no class.

I really like the name Jade too, especially as I know some lovely Jades, but I do wonder if pairing it with Sapphire makes it looks like you have named one after the other. I like children to have their own name that is not in relation to their older sibling. Zara goes well with Sapphire, I think, while being completely different.

whataloadabullocks · 13/08/2022 20:27

I think Sapphire is a lovely name. I don't think any of the names you mention are 'chavvy' personally I don't like the name 'Pearl' but that's only because there was one at school who wasn't very pleasant! So when I hear the name I have a feeling of dread (sorry to any lovely Pearls out there).
It's funny though that some gems aren't used, I mean I've never met a diamond or Tanzanite or Zirconium!
