What are your thoughts on Edgar?

Sure, nothing wrong with Edgar :) A great choice: a name with a strong etymology and not much heard of these days!

20viona · 17/07/2022 18:08

Christ no

RestingMurderousFace · 17/07/2022 18:09

Love it, reminds me of the Dutch footballer, Edgar Davids.

49er · 17/07/2022 18:09

Just have a think about what his school friends will shorten that to OP Hmm

LadyEloise1 · 17/07/2022 18:10

I don't like it. I think of J Edgar Hoover the head of the FBI - history has not been kind to him.

Rogue1001MNer · 17/07/2022 18:11

Middle name Allen?

nannybeach · 17/07/2022 18:14

I was also thinking Edgar Allen Poe,it's revolting, incredibly old,I cannot see a little baby. I love Edward, wanted to call my son this,in my age group 70s lots of Edwins

Mollymalone123 · 17/07/2022 18:17

i love it but then it was my Grandad’s name who was the sweetest, most generous man who we all adored.Uf anything his nickname would be Ed or Eddie.I do have to laugh at people saying it’s an awful name when you look at the quite ridiculous names children have been saddled with .At least it’s not made up or completely ridiculous but a proper name.

itssquidstella · 17/07/2022 18:23

I love it!

LividLaVidaLoca · 17/07/2022 18:25

Was in my top 5 for DS.

SpaceJamtart · 17/07/2022 18:35

Its not one that I'd use, but we all have different tastes

My friend was chatted up in a nightclub by a guy she thought was really fit, until he put his number in her phone and his name was Edgar. She came back over and said she couldn't go out with him, because he was hot, but nobody is hot enough to pull of Edgar

BinBandit · 17/07/2022 19:27

I love Edgar.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 17/07/2022 19:35

There was a very cute, serious toddler Edgar at DD’s nursery (he would be 12 or so now). It really suited him and everyone always smiled when they mentioned him. It’s kind of a fun name to say, and memorable because you don’t hear it much.

I like it, as long as you’re the kind of family who are at ease with old-school, currently unfashionable names. Plus there’s always Ed for short.

KirstenBlest · 17/07/2022 19:48

I like it. Egg in This Life.

TheBirdintheCave · 18/07/2022 23:44

@Mollymalone123 Right? I never understand the animosity towards older, uncommon names. Edgar's only crime is being unheard of. My son is Gilbert and I had the same comments when I suggested his name on a Facebook group. I was told it was ugly, bully-worthy and that I would be committing child abuse if I used it. Surely no genuine name is worthy of such vitriol? 🤷🏻‍♀️ When it comes to names with actual etymology, for me anyway, its all down to personal taste. Would I choose the name Edgar? No. But am I going to tell other people not to use it purely because it's not to my liking? Of course not.

I'm pretty sure that 20 years ago no one would have considered Edith or Sybil as potential baby names but then Downton Abbey happened and now every baby is George or Evelyn or Arthur etc.

What are your thoughts on Edgar?

Very impressive, specially since, J Edgar Hoover, Fbi

LadyEloise1 · 17/07/2022 18:10

I don't like it. I think of J Edgar Hoover the head of the FBI - history has not been kind to him.

At the same time, with his dossiers, he seemed to have a good network

SpaceJamtart · 19/07/2022 01:02

@Mollymalone123
But OP asked for thoughts on the name? It is reasonable people to share their thoughts that it is not a nice name- otherwise she would have started a thread saying something like 'tell me how lovely the name Edgar is, no negative opinions please'.
I don't think Edgars only crime is being unknown, it is a fairly well known name- just one that people don't like

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 19/07/2022 01:10

I like it but be prepared for people to nickname him Raven.

mum2jakie · 19/07/2022 01:34

If you have a child with this name or a strong personal attachment, it might be better to avoid a baby name thread as, by their nature, they are going to attract some critical feedback. A parent is asking for opinions so they are going to be shared.

I don't read threads about my kids' names but they are often mentioned in threads about dull unimaginative names or naughty kids' names etc. Pretty sure my kids would prefer the names they have rather than some names suggested on this board.

Totally agree with this. My favourite girls name has often been described as ‘smelly’ on here, but I like it and that opinion doesn’t bother me. While I wouldn’t go up to the parent of an Edgar and tell them I dislike the name, if someone asks for an opinion I assume they want a broad spectrum of thoughts and mine is that Edgar is a thoroughly unappealing name. She doesn’t have to agree with me or take it on board if she’s unconcerned by the feedback. No name is universally liked.

SlagathaChristie · 19/07/2022 13:32

I like it.

midsomermurderess · 19/07/2022 16:19

I rather like it.

SpeckledlyHen · 19/07/2022 16:22

I always think of the little baby dragon in the John Lewis advert a few years back - he was called Edgar. I think it suits the dragon, not sure about a human though.
