I really like Maggie but don’t like Margaret. I love Maggie Alice but DH thinks she would need to be Margaret Alice as Maggie isn’t a “proper” name IYSWIM.
what’s the mumsnet verdict?

I'm with your DH on this.
Maggie at home but Margaret on the birth certificate. It gives her a choice later. Maggie is lovely but so is Meg, Polly, Molly, Margie etc and she may choose a different one as a teen.

If you don't like Margaret, there are plenty of other names which could yield the nickname Maggie -

Margot, Magda, Magdalena, Magdala, Magnolia, Marigold, Magaly, Marguerite, Margarita, Greta, Mairead, Marit, Margalit, Marketa, Margaretha, Marsaili, Marharyta, Daisy, Marjorie...

@HaveringWavering I'm not sure, I've only ever heard it for Elizabeth - I thought Josie was the nn for Josephine.

A name can have more than one nickname- eg Lizzie, Beth for Elizabeth or Maggie, Peggy for Margaret.

JosEPHine. That’s where “Effie” comes from. It bears no relation to Elizabeth, unless you have a pronounced Essex or Lahndan accent and say ”Elizabeff”.

I know an Effy, full name Josephine. Could also be a nickname for Seraphina (Sephy/Effy) or Euphemia (which is yuck but still)

I don't like Margaret but love Magdalene/Magdalena. I probably wouldn't use just Maggie, although I like it a lot.

Why do people think Margot is a full name and Maggie isn't? Surely Margot is short for Marguerite?

I had a similar dilemma, but in the end we could not decide on a "long" name and knew we wouldn't use it so she's just Maggie on her BC. Ironically, we now called her Margaret as a nick name 🤦‍♀️

Personally, not keen on it with Alice. Alice is a lovely name but it does sound awkward.

I like the name Maggie but it’s a little too close to maggot for me. I also agree with DH that it’s better as a short-form than a Christian name.

I also agree that it doesn’t flow very well, Alice Maggie is better but I’m still not keen on the combination.

I’d keep Alice, use as a Christian name and choose a new middle name.

I know the character in skins was Elizabeth but traditionally it’s Euphemia, but Seraphina or Josephine work. You could also just use it for anything beginning with F. I do think Effy is too much of a nn to be a full name, and your daughter might like some options.

If I was Maggie I would rather be Maggie on the birth certificate than Margaret, only because Margaret seems ugly/old-fashioned while Maggie seems OK.

I've got one of each - a DD with a technical diminutive who is exactly that on the birth certificate. And a DS who has a long form on his bc.

With DS I think the factors for the extra admin faff that a pp mentioned were: his name would only be 2 letters long if it was the diminutive on the bc. and they are similar (eg Charlie is similar to Charles in a way that Maggie is not similar to Margaret)

I agree with DH, full name on Birth Certificate, known as niclname if you want. Give the child options for future, applying for jobs, at different ages and stages of life etc

My DM is Margaret, she hates it.

Personally I don’t like Maggie, I think it’s quite harsh sounding. It’s the ‘ag’. I don’t like Agatha or Aggie either.

However I don’t think it flows with Alice as it’s another ‘A’ sound. I think it needs another middle name.

It's an okay name but I don't think it goes with Alice.

We registered daughter with Betty as her middle name; the registrar said 'Did you mean 'Elizabeth'? No, we said, B-E-T-T-Y. This was in 1977.
