Thanks for all the opinions on my other thread 😄
Dh and I have continued to ponder and have decided Susan is no longer on our list, but we have added a couple of others that we are now considering. So our updated list is
Shirley (my favourite for years)
Bernadette (Bernie or Ettie for nn)
Marjorie
Magnolia

Dh likes nn Madge for Marjorie 😄

Are you giving birth to a 50 year old?

Thats rude

SwedishEdith · 02/07/2022 14:26

I'm late 50s and these were old fashioned names when I was a child. Two were names if friends' mums. As an OP suggested, would you really want to be called any of these names yourself?

Missed your other thread but Suzie is a great name.

Beachsidesunset · 02/07/2022 14:31

... you can't be serious?

RebeccaCloud9 · 02/07/2022 15:07

Sorry yes I'm being rude. To 50 year olds. Should have said 75! (Though I do know a lovely 50yo Bernadette).

Those names just haven't come back round yet. I'm not the only one thinking it!

GreenWhiteViolet · 02/07/2022 15:19

Susan is a much nicer choice than any of these!

I do know a Bernadette in her twenties, but she's from a very religious family. That's the assumption I'd make, that it had to be after the saint. If I had to pick one from your new list, that's what I'd go with - but none are great. Surely you can't be serious about Shirley!

CP2701 · 02/07/2022 16:39

🤦🏽‍♀️ Good grief!

SpringIntoChaos · 02/07/2022 16:58

Awful names...just imagine your child as a little 4 year old, starting school, called any of those names!

Then imagine her first days in high school...poor kid is going to get slaughtered!! School is brutal!

Floralnomad · 02/07/2022 17:06

Susan is better than any of these , which quite honestly are all dreadful .

MassiveSalad22 · 02/07/2022 17:08

Hmm. Valerie? Love Valley!

PritiPatelsMaker · 02/07/2022 09:39

Shirley is your favourite. If you can persuade DH I'd go with that. I've never met a Shirley who wasn't absolutely lovely Wink

We must have met a completely different set of Shirleys then!

daisypond · 02/07/2022 17:11

When my DC were four, there were several kids in their class called names that might be deemed very, very old-fashioned- Eg, Joyce, Trevor, Patricia etc. They did not get slaughtered. No one cared.

ComfyChairPose · 02/07/2022 17:23

I think Joyce could come back too. Isn't there a character in Stranger Things called Joyce.
Joy has come back already, as a middle name.

DogsAndGin · 02/07/2022 17:26

Anything. Literally anything is better than Shirley.

LadyEloise1 · 02/07/2022 17:27

Is this a wind up thread ?
Those names are awful.

DasGirl · 02/07/2022 17:28

All I can think of is "don't call me Shirley"Hmm

GoldenSpiral · 02/07/2022 20:12

Susan is better than all of these but Bernadette would be my next choice. This child is going to be very jealous of it's sibling's name...

BorisJohnsonsHair · 02/07/2022 20:14

How about Myrtle?

BanjoVio · 02/07/2022 20:14

Marjorie like margerine?
Madge like Madge Bishop?
Ok.

SBAM · 02/07/2022 20:17

I prefer suzannah to Susan. I think Bernadette is fine. There’s a Bernarda in my daughters year at school.
marjorie is too old fashioned for my tastes, but I do like magnolia, and think Maggie makes a sweet pet name.

SBAM · 02/07/2022 20:21

Also, in my family Shirley and Marjorie (&pp suggestion of Joyce) are in my great grandparents generation, Susan belongs to my parents generation, I’ve met several Susannahs around my age (23-35) and I’ve never met a magnolia.
If it’s the older fashioned/less common aspect that appeals how about Jaqueline? Carol? Barbara?

Marymary987 · 02/07/2022 20:32

They are all awful sorry!

SusanForeverIGuess · 02/07/2022 20:35

I'm a Susan and although I know I'm young for a Susan (it had already been in the top 5 American names for 20 years by the time my parents named me!) I still like it. I prefer it to my surname which is hard to say
Once when I was 30, I finally found my name on something, a teatowel at Winchester cathedral! So I bought it.

I think Suzanne was the more popular choice this side of the pond, Susan was more popular in the USA. I think.

Im always the only one which surprises me. In my year at schhol, in my last job, in this job... 🤷‍♀️

thelittlestbird · 02/07/2022 20:40

My daughter is Magnolia, nn Maggie. Can also be shortened to Lia or Noli if she fancies when she's older. Never met another (nor had any of the midwives or health visitor). It's a beautiful flowering tree. Forget what people say about the paint.

thelittlestbird · 02/07/2022 20:43

I actually think Shirley is a really rock n roll name. Shirley Manson is ace

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 02/07/2022 20:57

It sounds like you're trying too hard to be different.
I'd wait until you meet your baby . You'll probably think very differently.
