Help!!!! Girls name - Lydia or Verity?

plzhelpmepickaname · 19/05/2022 14:54

Our baby girl is due soon, and we're really stuck on either Verity or Lydia as a name.

Middle name is likely to be Grace or Jane (although I'm not overly keen on Verity Grace - too many virtue names in one name!)

Looking to gauge opinions on which one people like best?

PS, before it comes up, yes I do know there are words that rhyme with these names, and no, I'm not concerned about that :)

I think both names are pretty, but given they are quite unusual, I'm now thinking, is the reason they are unusual because no one likes them?? 😂

Please help!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

Lydia definitely. I regret not using it for DD2, especially since I've discovered several ancestors with the name. It goes well with either middle name.

emmathedilemma · 19/05/2022 15:24

Lydia is lovely, a classic IMO.
I'm less keen on Verity, it seems a bit twee.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 19/05/2022 15:25

Lydia - I've never met a child with that name and it's lovely

pantherrose · 19/05/2022 15:26

Verity is lovely! I have never liked Lydia.

toastofthetown · 19/05/2022 15:26

I prefer Verity. Much more unusual than Lydia, and so I think Lydia will be more popular on this thread, as it’s more popular in real life too!

CousCousSalad · 19/05/2022 15:33

I think both are lovely - no harm in having two names on the table and seeing which feels right once she's here?

I know adults called both Verity and Lydia and they are unusual enough that I only know one or two but normal enough to be easily spelt & pronounced.

I do know a child called Verity which doesn't work so well - it doesn't suit the specific child at all - feels quite a light, elegant name against a very chaotic, clumsy child. Lydia feels more versatile in that sense.

Jessbow · 19/05/2022 15:45

Love Lydia, Liddy being quite a cute nickname

Verity is a bit ''Private school and ballet classes''

Amdone123 · 19/05/2022 15:48

I love both - no help, sorry. Do as a pp said, and wait til you meet her.
Also love Felicity ❤

ElenaSt · 19/05/2022 15:49

Lydia. Lovely name and one of my favourite Dean Friedman songs.

Thanks everyone, at least I know there are people out there that like both names!! 😂

I agree that Verity is probably more unusual (and I like that about it) but also that it could be considered posh, and Lydia is more classic although I don't know whether it's one of those Marmite names that some people won't be keen on.

Maybe I will wait to see, but still very interested in people's opinions, I am always surprised to hear what people think. @Amdone123 I like Felicity too but we already have a family friend with that name and I remember my mum saying she really dislikes it (not that it matters exactly but I wouldn't like to pick a name already knowing my mum will secretly hate it haha).

Verity is gorgeous

Not a fan of Lydia tbh

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2022 17:26

Lydia of the two, but both are nice

Prefer Jane to Grace. Grace is overused as a middle name

I'd go for Jane Lydia/Verity Surname

BraveryBot9to5 · 19/05/2022 17:30

Lydia

Verity is a bit pastor's daughter. Plus hard to shorten

Pemba · 19/05/2022 17:30

I prefer Lydia, such an elegant classic name, although Verity is quite nice too. Both are slightly unusual, but not unheard of, obviously.

annabell22 · 19/05/2022 17:39

Lydia by far the nicest - goes well with a single syllable middle name

Mumofgirls2017 · 19/05/2022 17:51

Lydia

Twizbe · 19/05/2022 17:56

I like both. Wait until she's here now. She might just fit one more

ThatshallotBaby · 19/05/2022 17:57

Lydia Jane is quite lovely

ANUsernam · 19/05/2022 18:01

Not keen on Lydia personally, to me it's a very plain, frumpy kind of name so if you did use it, I'd go Lydia Grace because Grace balances it whereas Lydia Jane is two plain type names and makes it more frumpy.

Agree with you that I dislike Verity Grace for the same reasons as you, but I like Verity Jane. And I like Verity as a name in and of itself.

But I agree with pp's who say, keep both in mind until the baby arrives and see which suits them.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 19/05/2022 18:01

Lydia Jane.

Verity feels a bit fussy to me and Grace is hugely popular as a nickname.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 19/05/2022 18:02

As a middle name, I mean.

BertyFlanter · 19/05/2022 18:03

I have a Lydia who is almost 22 now. Named after a grandparent. Never came across another in school etc. When telling people her name when younger she would often get mistaken for Olivia (loads of Olivia's in school), and we were warned about a particular STI that rhymes as a nickname, but maybe once or twice in high school did anyone actually make that connection.
I also went to school with a Verity and think it's a beautiful name too. So not much use in my post really!

Ruralbliss · 19/05/2022 18:05

Verity for me. Can't abide Lydia so harsh sounding.

Retrievemysanity · 19/05/2022 18:09

My friend is verity. She gets called V by close friends and that’s quite cool. Her parents gave her a more standard middle name for her to go by in case she didn’t like Verity but she loves it. DD goes to school with a verity too. I’m not a fan of Lydia.

GreatCuppa · 19/05/2022 18:17

Lydia. I don’t like Verity at all. Grace is massively overused as a middle name though.
