Help!!!! Girls name - Lydia or Verity?

plzhelpmepickaname · 19/05/2022 14:54

Our baby girl is due soon, and we're really stuck on either Verity or Lydia as a name.

Middle name is likely to be Grace or Jane (although I'm not overly keen on Verity Grace - too many virtue names in one name!)

Looking to gauge opinions on which one people like best?

PS, before it comes up, yes I do know there are words that rhyme with these names, and no, I'm not concerned about that :)

I think both names are pretty, but given they are quite unusual, I'm now thinking, is the reason they are unusual because no one likes them?? 😂

Please help!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!

For anyone that's interested and seeing as you all took the time to respond and no one ever seems to update these threads...
We chose Verity. 😊

Congratulations on little Verity!

I do appreciate an update Grin

Beautiful. What a gorgeous and uncommon name.

RuthW · 24/08/2022 12:24

Roselilly36 · 24/08/2022 12:54

X post, congrats

Lydia. It's such a beautiful name

Eek3under3 · 24/08/2022 13:30

Congratulations! Verity is a lovely name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/08/2022 14:04

Ah, nice to know OP. Very pretty name and probably a bit more uncommon than Lydia although both are lovely. Did you decide on Verity Grace or Verity Jane, or a completely different middle name?

DaisyJoy1 · 24/08/2022 14:15

Love Lydia. Verity reminds me of 'ferrety' which I don't even know is a real word

DaisyJoy1 · 24/08/2022 14:16

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry. Just read that you chose Verity! Should have RTFT. Ahhhh.

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2022 15:33

I think Ferrety too, @DaisyJoy1 , but a friend used it for her DD. When I see Felicity I think it sounds like how some of my colleagues say Velocity, or of a neighbour who I call Ferocity.

Lydia is ruined for me by people shortening it to Lyds.

And yes, do look up the OP's latest message before posting.

Verity is a refreshing change from all the Lily, Lola,Luna, Evie, Ella, Ava, Mia, Mila, Isla type names

Mummytobe333 · 25/08/2022 19:12

Lydia is lovely 😊 not a fan of verity sorry

Pemba · 25/08/2022 19:28

@Mummytobe333 . What is the point of saying that? The OP has chosen Verity, the baby is here and named. As you'd know if you could be bothered to read the thread properly.

Mummytobe333 · 25/08/2022 20:01

Sorry I didn’t know. There is 5 pages worth of comments I wasn’t to know - I didn’t mean to upset.

Sorry but everyone isn’t obliged to read all comments before commenting. It’s not like you have to tick a ‘I promise to read every comment by OP before commenting myself’ box before you’re allowed to join MN. Clearly just an accident, no need to be so snarky about it.

Verity.

Lydia just sounds like "lid of a....." To me!

Judging by your name I'm assuming you're Scottish and I agree.
I had in my head Lydia saucepan or Lydia teapot which sounds normal in some Scots accents.

Congratulations OP. I thoroughly agree with your choice, though Ididnt comment because I didn’t see your thread until today.
I’ve known only one Verity and she was the sweetest lady with really gracious manners.
All the best

Thanks everyone! In response to the comments...

  1. I'm not remotely offended by anyone who didn't read all the comments and is still saying they prefer Lydia, although @Pemba I appreciate you making the point, someone could be upset by that. It was so close that we actually took 24 hours after she was born to name her. Lydia is such a beautiful name I still love it!!
  2. Yes, it does rhyme with ferrety, my sister's MIL pointed that out the other day haha, we did know this when we picked it and to be fair, it's less offensive than the thing that rhymes with Lydia 😂
  3. We actually went for Verity Kate, Kate is a family name.
  4. Glad everyone appreciated the update, when I read these posts I always get to the end and I'm like nooooooooooo but what did you call them though???????? And you never find out!!!! 😭😂😱
  5. I am also not sure if Ferrety is a real word. If anyone finds out, come back and update us 😂

Thank you everyone appreciated all the comments🤗

www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ferrety#other-words

Noun (1)
ferrety \ ˈfer-ə-tē
\ adjective

It's a word

KirstenBlest · 26/08/2022 22:07

Verity Kate is nice. Grace and Jane are ok as first names but just filler middle names.

HilarityEnsues · 26/08/2022 22:10

Congratulations, OP, on your little Verity! If I'd had another, I would have gone for Verity, the meaning is 'truth' and what can be lovelier than that?!
