Clio - are car comments really a problem?

Clio as an alternative to cleo came up on another thread I started. It’s really growing on me but how much of a problem would the car thing be? Any clios out there? Or anyone with a dd clio? Any clios you know?

Car. I’ve never met a person called Clio, but I once met a woman called Cortina. It’s stuck in mind for over 30 years - she said it was a ‘location of conception name’. (reference The Likely Lads, for any other elderly mnetters)

So classy 😂

SoManyTshirts · 19/05/2022 16:32

I don’t know how to link YouTube but ‘Likely Lads Bob’s banns reading’ covers it

Pattygonia · 19/05/2022 16:32

If you want a muse name, Thalia is another one of the muses that is still used as a name. Personally, I like Clio but I am really into Greek mythology - obvs to many people the car reference is the first thing they think of

Other classical names you could consider as Ariadne, Atalanta, Penelope, Persephone and Callisto (Though worth checking out their stories as not all great!)

I will admit, that unfortunately, I would judge you/your child if you spelt your dc name the same as a car model rather than the accepted spelling, but if you don't care what people think, go for it.

proudofmynameclio · 19/05/2022 16:40

I only joined mumsnet to say it’s my name actually although am a longtime lurker. I was born in the eighties so before the car 🚗. People do mention the car but they also mention cleopatra. I can’t say it’s ever been an issue for me although I really liked living in a French speaking country where people could say and spell my name correctly without any problem. Have to say people on this thread have been very rude which I’ve never and I’ve never experienced that in real life. In fact I was so annoyed it made me want to sign up after many years of looking on here.

I think Clio definitely makes me think of the car, I've only seen the name spelt as Cleo, which I think looks better and personally much prefer.

This, why spell the name the same as the car? That is just inviting comments imo.

emuloc · 19/05/2022 16:48

The name is lovely though, and not very common.

Satsumaonaplate · 19/05/2022 16:55

I assumed this thread would be about the car 😅

ZeusandClio · 19/05/2022 17:04

I understand that people may not know things or have heard of them before, but refusing to think that perhaps you don't know everything is so weird. Of course Clio is a name. She was a daughter of Zeus and the goddess of poetry, music, dance, history..... I think it's a beautiful name. In fact if you look at my user name you'll see what our dog and cat are named! 😁

Because the car is named after the goddess. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

GoldenGirdle · 19/05/2022 17:05

I also only clicked on her because I thought it was about the cars.

PriamFarrl · 19/05/2022 17:06

It made me think of Nicole and Papa.

ladycarlotta · 19/05/2022 17:40

I really like this spelling - it makes me think of the muse too - and I really doubt it'll be as much of an issue as people on this thread make out.

DemBonesDemBones · 19/05/2022 17:52

I'd assume you didn't know how to spell Cleo.

CocktailsOnTheBeach · 19/05/2022 17:59

I was just browsing and thought this was a thread about how reliable clios are, my sister and one of my friend's had one and they were a nightmare. So yeah don't name your child clio. Someone in a birth group im in named their child Nova, couldn't help but laugh to myself when I pictured a vauxhall Nova, pretty sure the girl was too young to realise she named her child after a shit car from the 1980s.

crumpet · 19/05/2022 18:02

Love it. Clio was on my list for Ds as was Penelope. Dd ended up being called something else but if Ds hadn’t turned out to be a boy, Clio was very high on the list.

crumpet · 19/05/2022 18:03

And yes prefer Clio to Cleo spelling - entirely different root of the name

Snowiscold · 19/05/2022 20:37

Yes, I think Greek muse of history. I like it. You can spell it Kleio, I think, which is closer to the Greek. Traditionally it’s not pronounced like Klee-oh either, but you’ll be on a losing battle with that one if you spell it Clio.

NerdyBird · 19/05/2022 20:37

I like Clio. I've come across Clio as short for Cliona in a book. The Glass Lake I think.

AndSoFinally · 19/05/2022 20:54

Reminds of the Welsh version, Llio. Double L is a Cl sound in Welsh so pronounced the same

LondonQueen · 19/05/2022 20:58

Sorry when I saw this I thought you was asking for car recommendations. Wouldn't use it.

Cocoabutterkim · 19/05/2022 21:00

Is it pronounced in the same way as Cleo?

Betweentheacts1 · 20/05/2022 07:07

Thanks all for comments - especially @proudofmynameclio for joining up to post!

I have a Cleo but even when she was born I got “can we call her Renault,” from my annoying brother 😂 Quickly shut him down and it’s never been said since.

Hadtocomment · 21/05/2022 10:12

As I posted on your other thread there is always the name Clea if you want a similar sound but no car ref. A nice name and I knew one but don't think it's very known.
