Enoch?

We are in love with the name Enoch but are concerned that people will immediately think of Enoch Powell.
Many of my friends of a similar age (mid 20s) are baffled by my concern and don't think the connection matters. I've found people a little older are very put off. My mum says there is no way it is usable.

Thoughts? I obviously don't want people assuming DC is named after Powell.

Has the baby started to show any racist tendencies?

ArtVandalay · 15/05/2022 13:44

Definitely Enoch Powell comes to mind.

Apart from that, what a hideous, ugly name!

Scottishgirl85 · 17/05/2022 07:40

Makes me think of the St Enoch shopping centre in Glasgow, which was pretty old fashioned/run down in my day!

"then why would they/their parents have been concerned about (or indeed have ever heard of) a famous British racist when selecting a name? There's nothing to be interested by, really; those cultural connotations aren't there and Powell is irrelevant."

@ClumpingBambooIsALie but if you select a name from a different culture, you ought to be aware of the connotations that name carries. If I named my child Xilai after disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai, there's no escaping the baggage of the name.

@veronicagoldberg I think the difference between those two names is that Enoch is Biblical and Xilai is not. So Christians from other parts of the world use the name Enoch in reference to the Biblical figure. Someone who is not resident in the UK probably has no reason to be aware of the British politician.

Even if Enoch had been the powerhouse behind the END of apartheid in south africa

i still would despise the name!

As Enoch Powell is probably the only 'Enoch' that most people have ever heard of I think you risk being labelled as a racist, right wing fascist if you call your child this.

I'm with your mum.

Yep. Still way too soon.

Enoch Powell here too. Please, don't even. The kid will suffer for it. Some names are just forever tainted - see recent thread on here about 'Myra'...
