Enoch?

We are in love with the name Enoch but are concerned that people will immediately think of Enoch Powell.
Many of my friends of a similar age (mid 20s) are baffled by my concern and don't think the connection matters. I've found people a little older are very put off. My mum says there is no way it is usable.

Thoughts? I obviously don't want people assuming DC is named after Powell.

Reminded me of the dummy that David had in Heartbeat!! Vernon ran over it in the end!

cottagegardenflower · 14/05/2022 15:33

It's dreadful even if you don't get the connotations with Powell. Ee Knock. Just not a nice sounding name

ElenaSt · 14/05/2022 15:33

The only Enoch I have ever met was a bubbly black guy who would be in his 50s or even 60s now.

Aside from any association to Enoch Powell, it's just not a particularly nice name.

Eee Knock.

saraclara · 14/05/2022 15:34

I'm glad you've changed your mind. In the UK it's still a complete no no. The only Enoch I know is a black African immigrant to the UK, and culturally that's entirely different. And maybe people like him will help to rehabilitate the name. But it's unlikely to happen any time soon.

Birdie746 · 14/05/2022 15:35

Enoch or Adolf - pick one.

420Bruh · 14/05/2022 15:37

Eustace? You can't name your child Enoch. People will think you're racist.

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2022 15:38

Enoch Powell will give us a job, diggin' our way to Annascaul

shreddednips · 14/05/2022 15:39

Absolutely not, sorry OP. Immediately think of Powell and it's not fair to give your DC a name with those associations. It's not quite on the same level as Adolf but it's pretty close!

MadMadMadamMim · 12/05/2022 19:13

As Enoch Powell is probably the only 'Enoch' that most people have ever heard of I think you risk being labelled as a racist, right wing fascist if you call your child this.

I'm with your mum.

You hate your baby before you’ve even met him?

fairytwinkletastic · 14/05/2022 15:59

Enoch Powell and the Rivers of Blood speech is on the GCSE History syllabus, I really wouldn't.

notagamer · 14/05/2022 15:59

Settling aside the awful connotations to the name

it is suite simply a bloody awful name

Sounds like a sort of hybrid emu ostrich llama figure

Thanks all for the feedback, will definitely steer clear. Anyone have any similar alternatives?

Similar alternatives?

mussolini
franco
hitler
stalin

or nice alternatives? Thousands of them available

notagamer · 14/05/2022 16:01

But I don’t think you and i have similar tastes in boys names!

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 14/05/2022 16:01

Its a terrible name.

Ionianprincess · 14/05/2022 16:12

You could call your second Adolf?

BelperLawnmower · 14/05/2022 16:12

nesday · 12/05/2022 20:10

Thanks all for the feedback, will definitely steer clear. Anyone have any similar alternatives?

Judas is a nice biblical name.

Herod?

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 14/05/2022 18:39

Horrible name; horrible connotations.

Sorry!

LittleBearPad · 12/05/2022 19:16

Powell. First thought

Rivers of blood, second thought.

I’m in my early forties so not massively old.

Same age as you and exactly the same first thoughts.

Starbeach · 15/05/2022 05:56

I'm Welsh and unless you live in the depths of Welsh speaking wales everyone is going to think powell

veronicagoldberg · 15/05/2022 08:48

Dreadful.

The Powell association is bad, but the sound of the name is awful. "'e knock" - sounds like a Yorkshireman telling you someone is at the door.

KirstenBlest · 15/05/2022 13:29

@Starbeach , I still think people would think Powell, but if you used Enoc (Enn-oc) they'd think Enoc Huws

Speedweed · 15/05/2022 13:33

Goes well with Myra and Adolf, if you were thinking of siblings...

KirstenBlest · 15/05/2022 13:38

@Speedweed , I don't think it's fair to put EP in the same category as MH and AH
