Lowrie?

Eyewanttobreafree · 08/05/2022 16:23

Thinking Lowrie or Lowry for a boy. Shetland name I believe.

I think it's a derivative of Laurence but also lowrie can mean fox? Could anyone shed any light?

Gentle opinions welcome...

I did think of the female tv presenter from a while ago.
I would assume your dc was female until told otherwise.

BetsHilton · 09/05/2022 05:42

Lowrie is feminine to me. Lowry is an Irish surname and most famously associated with a corrupt politician. Overall, nothing nice about the name in my opinion.

Marty13 · 09/05/2022 06:21

I'd never seen it written like this (not british) and I don't love it, it looks a bit strange to me. Made me think of Lois Lowry the writer. She's a good writer besides but I'd stick to Laurence with Laurie as a nickname.

thewhatsit · 09/05/2022 06:46

I immediately started thinking of Lowri (girls name) - and thought what a fantastic name, I’ve never heard of a bad Lowri.
As a boys name and pronounced differently.. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen suggested but I’m unconvinced. I’m not sure about the Lowry for the painter thing, that was a surname anyway.

BlewsClews · 09/05/2022 06:51

It sounds like a surname to me I'm afraid

FlickyCrumble · 09/05/2022 06:56

Lowri in Wales is pronounced Lou ree as in the sound from Loud. With a ree in the end. I think it’s Welsh for Laura.

TrashyPanda · 09/05/2022 07:56

Scottish, worked extensively in Shetland and never heard of it.

like PP I think of Lowri Turner, so not a boys name.

Justkeeppedaling · 09/05/2022 08:21

Lowri the girls' name rhymes with cow not low.

I like Laurie, short for Laurence, but Lowrie looks too feminine when it's written down.

Lowri the Welsh girls name is pronounced with an ‘ow’ like ow I’ve hurt myself, not ‘low’ as in opposite to high.

In Welsh (s) it's pronounced low as in not high.

Are you in Wales? In Welsh it is low as in not high.

FairyCakeWings · 09/05/2022 08:27

I know a couple of little girls called Lowry, and have never heard it for a boy. Honestly, I’d think you were giving your boy a girls name. I might be wrong, but it would be a common misconception.

stoneysongs · 09/05/2022 08:32

Lots of people choose to pronounce Lowri with the first syllable rhyming with cow (including Lowri Turner I think), but as PPs have said, it's a name from the Welsh language and in Welsh is pronounced with low as in not high.

romdowa · 09/05/2022 08:36

It reminds me of the Irish fairy tail of King lowry lynch , the King with the donkeys ears.

Eyewanttobreafree · 09/05/2022 08:38

Thanks for input. I am based in Scotland mostly so wondering how often the girl thing will be a confusion but will have more of a think... I have a few other options but this was a favourite of DH.
There is a character in the Shetland tv series called Lowrie. Need to hope the bbc show repeats!!

I went to school with one who was definitely Welsh and it was pronounced Lowry, Low to rhyme with cow. I think it’s pretty for a girls name but that’s my association.

BetsHilton · 09/05/2022 08:57

@Eyewanttobreafree speaking as someone who called my dog after the lead character in (what we thought was!) a popular American HBO series that ran to 6 seasons - don’t call your child after an obscure bbc tv character! I’m already sick of ‘sorry what is he called..how do you spell it… oh that’s unusual how did you come up with that name … no I’ve never heard of that tv show…. Oh right.

And that’s for the dog!! Cant imagine having to go through it with a child all the time.

calmlakes · 09/05/2022 12:44

I'm Scots by the way and would still think it was girls name at first.

I’m Scottish and never heard this (Laurie more common as a diminutive of Laurence). I’m not a shetlander though. I thought it was an Irish surname!

Also never come across one in Scotland but do know 2 irish people with the surname Lowry!

CaffiSaliMali · 09/05/2022 17:06

The Welsh girls name Lowri is definitely low as in low down not low to rhyme with cow.

We've several in our family and I know several other women called Lowri, all from Welsh speaking families and they all pronounce the same way. They're from different parts of Wales too.

The only people I've heard say Lowri as Lowry are either not Welsh or, if Welsh, are not Welsh speaking.

I know a Lowri in England who gets Lowry even when she explains it's Lowri. If you asked people who knew her many would say 'it's Lowry' but it doesn't mean they would be right.

CaffiSaliMali · 09/05/2022 17:26

On OP's question - I think Lowry would be an easier spelling to use for a boy and for that pronunciation.

Lowrie looks more like Lowri so more likely to cause confusion with someone familiar with the Welsh girls name.

This may not be an issue in Scotland if Lowrie is well known as a boys name.

CockleburIck · 09/05/2022 17:39

I believe it, but I live in Wales and was a teacher for many years here. I taught a few Lowris, and they all pronounced it the other way - 'Low' to rhyme with cow.
This was in the South, and yes, not Welsh speaking.

LunaMay · 09/05/2022 17:44

I like it for a boy. Makes me think of the movie Bad Boys...

SupetArt · 11/05/2022 13:28

I thought you’d just misspelled the female Welsh name. I think you will have problems with pronunciation and people will think it’s a girls name. Lowry is better

babyjellyfish · 11/05/2022 22:06

My first thought was that it was a misspelling of the girl's name Lowri.

I think Laurence is better for a boy.
