I love Matilda and Freya

lljkk · 08/05/2022 08:19

Sadly I don't share your taste, OP, but still encourage you to choose what you like I don't actually hate them all.
Melody would be nice.

OneCup · 08/05/2022 08:23

Juliet or Violet for me!

DogsAndGin · 08/05/2022 08:28

Arietta - not a name
Connie - nickname
Freya - nice if you’re Scandinavian
Jasmine - old lady
Juliet - old lady
Lottie - nickname
Maeve - old lady
Matilda - lovely
Melody - cheap
Meredith - awful!
Rosalie - over fussy
Sylvie - Nice if you’re French
Violet - nice

MargosKaftan · 08/05/2022 08:29

OP - dont just Lottie or Connie if you won't give them the full name. These are nicknames and it is sadly a class marker to have a nickname as a full name. Give them the full name even if you dont use it. Charlotte or Constance.

Melody and Meradith are gorgeous and underused. (Nickname options of Mel, Oddie and Merry are lovely.)

I do have a soft spot for Violet, I wish I'd had it on my name list when having dd.

Nosetickle · 08/05/2022 08:29

I honestly think they’re all lovely names, Rosalie is my favourite closely followed by Freya.

icecreamcart · 08/05/2022 08:44

Love matilda lotti and violet

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/05/2022 10:12

Arietta - it's ok. Looks pretty and sounds pretty but I don't know. I wouldn't want to be named it

Connie - I like as a NN for Constance which is beautiful.

Freya - I like but it's a running joke with my DH that wherever we go we hear a parent shouting Freya.

Jasmine - beautiful and I've not met one in ages

Juliet - I want to like it but I don't

Lottie - ok as a NN for Charlotte (I prefer Charley though) but I can't stand it as a standalone name. I used to love it when younger since reading a little princess but it is so boring now as they are everywhere

Maeve - I like it, though prefer Mavis

Matilda - please no more! Another name I loved whilst younger but I am bored to death of it now.

Melody - pretty just not my style

Meredith - love it

Rosalie - I love how it looks but not how it's pronounced

Sylvie - ok, not for me

Violet - nice enough but seems to be gaining in popularity very quickly

Jasmine is my favourite from your list, closely followed by Meredith

PrimroseBaking · 08/05/2022 10:15

Love Connie, Meredith, Rosalie, Juliet & Matilda.

Hate Maeve - awful. Not too keen on Melody or Arietta - both remind me of wannabe Instagram influencer babies for some reason.

Also love Lottie if it's a nickname for Charlotte!

ChristmasJumpers · 08/05/2022 12:18

I've never heard Arietta before and love it!! It's gone straight to the top of my list 😍

ChristmasJumpers · 08/05/2022 12:23

@DogsandGin after a quick google, Arietta is a name. 2843rd in popularity in 2019. From German and Italian origin

Bimblybomeyelash · 08/05/2022 12:31

All perfectly nice, normal, inoffensive names. Apart from Arrietta, which I like but think it sounds made-up.

TempsPerdu · 08/05/2022 16:42

They’re mostly fine OP. I don’t think our tastes are very similar, and Juliet is the only one I’d consider myself, but none of them jumps out as being particularly awful or offensive. My honest opinions:

Arietta - way too frilly for my taste. Also seems like a ‘mishmash’ sort of name, like a hybrid of Arianna, Henrietta and Arietty.

Connie - insubstantial and lacks gravitas

Freya - loved this 15 or so years ago, but now it’s way overdone

Jasmine - fine, perfectly nice name. Don’t like Jas/Jazz/Jazzi as a nickname though.

Juliet - lovely

Lottie - I have an irrational dislike of this name. It just seems so twee and infantile, especially without Charlotte to adult it up a bit.

Maeve - OK, but it’s a flash in the pan, 15 minutes of fame sort of name that will date quickly.

Matilda - quite like but hate Tilly

Melody - quite pretty and not overused, just not my style

Meredith - OK and I quite like Merry as a nickname, but I prefer Merryn.

Rosalie - too saccharine sweet for me

Sylvie - I was in Clissold Park the other day and pretty much every second girl in the playground was called Sylvie. It’s nice but among certain circles it’s the new Elodie, which in turn was the new Amelie. I imagine it will massively surge in popularity soon.

Violet - quite nice but popular now and I prefer Viola

So I’d personally narrow the shortlist down to Juliet, Matilda (with a different nickname), Meredith and Violet, with Melody as a left-field option.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/05/2022 23:33

Arietta - No. if you are going to go for it, go the whole Arrietty hog
Connie - if it’s short for Constance or Constancia, then great
Freya - overused. Thora? Frieda?
Jasmine - ok
Juliet - ok, prefer Julia
Lottie - not as a full name, she won’t always be two. And Charlotte is overused. You could call her Lotte (Lotta)?
Maeve - makes me think of Mauve Minge and will date
Matilda - nice, lots of them though
Melody - no, bit naff. Allegra?
Meredith - lovely.
Rosalie - no, wet. Too many Rose names, but Rosanna is nicer if you must
Sylvie - nice, getting quite popular
Violet - ok, getting quite popular

Astrid, Adela, Stella, Marianne, Maryam, Marina, Serena, Imogen, Leonie might be others

Fivebeanchilli · 09/05/2022 23:41

Arietta - I don't know. I like Arietty for the associations but I'm not sure the name is that nice without them
Connie - I like Constance. Connie is ok
Freya - lovely. I know lots and lots of Freya's between about 13 and 20 though.
Jasmine - I don't like this and I hate Jazz.
Juliet - lovely. And this spelling is much the best.
Lottie - don't like.
Maeve - don't like.
Matilda - lovely. But very popular.
Melody - grim. Very American sounding.
Meredith - gorgeous. Far and away my favourite.
Rosalie - not keen but only because I have a bad association I think.
Sylvie - lovely.
Violet - lovely.

Viviennemary · 09/05/2022 23:51

Awful Arietta and Melody

Best Sylvie Violet Rosalie

Rainbowbaby13 · 10/05/2022 05:28

I don't understand people who put long versions of names on birth certificates if there is no intention of using them. I prefer shorter names anyway.

Arietta - not to my taste
Connie - bit dated
Freya - overused
Jasmine - love
Juliet - ok
Lottie - nice
Maeve - not a fan
Matilda - like
Melody - love ❤️
Meredith - nice
Rosalie - bit dated
Sylvie - love
Violet - bit to frilly

FairyLightPups · 10/05/2022 07:51

Thank you for the comments! DW has officially vetoed Matilda and Arietta. and said 'ding dong' when i said Melody 🙃

This would be fine if she came up with her own bloody ideas! Anyway she does like Meredith so I think that may be the winner.

Feckingfeck · 10/05/2022 09:40

Love Meredith

finallychangedmyusername · 12/05/2022 18:37

My favourites are Rosalie, Juliet, Matilda, Sylvie, Violet and Lottie (as a nickname for Charlotte). I also like Lettie as a nickname for Violet.

Kittykatmacbill · 12/05/2022 18:52

Arietta
Connie - Constance
Freya - there are so many of them
Jasmine - bit dates
Juliet
Lottie - Charlotte?
Maeve - love it!
Matilda
Melody - bit dated.
Meredith
Rosalie
Sylvie - love it!
Violet - always worry that they whack someone in reception and be known as violent until the end of school…

KayEmAy · 13/05/2022 01:47

Ah ruthless feels both liberating and scary because I like to be honest and funny but I don't like offending people intentionally lol

First thoughts -

Arietta - 3/10 it's not Ariana or Etta
Connie - 2/10 After Karen there is Carol and right behind her is Connie
Freya - 7/10 nordic princess and I love nn Frey and Rey
Jasmine - 6/10 it's a lovely name but it's just OK
Juliet 8/10 classic, timeless, adorable
Lottie 8/10 love it and love it SO much more on it's own than with Charlotte
Maeve 7/10 simple and beautiful
Matilda 6/10 I understand this is a cute name it's just not my style
Melody 8/10 pretty and underrated, unlike Aria (also pretty) you're not as likely to run into another one quickly
Meredith
Rosalie 7/10 - cute, like the cadence but would go by Rose
Sylvie 4/10 I know it's popular now, but I just don't like it, not all vintage names need to come back. Sylvie and Clara can stay where they are
Violet -7/10 love just wish it wans't so popular

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 13/05/2022 03:02

Arietta okay as a middle name
Connie old
Freya like it
Jasmine lovely even if Disney have ruined it for me
Juliet like it
Lottie twee
Maeve not keen
Matilda not keen
Melody like it
Meredith not keen
Rosalie twee
Sylvie love it
Violet shrinking or Beauregarde

So Freya Jasmine or Jasmine Freya works
Sylvie Arietta or Melody Arietta
Juliet Jasmine if JJ wanted as nickname

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 13/05/2022 03:04

Could also live with Melody Maeve but I do like alliteration whereas some shudder

Alfonsomango · 13/05/2022 10:55

Arietta - makes me think of the borrowers. Don't really like the name
Connie - nice
Freya - bit wishy washy and also overused recently
Jasmine - pretty
Juliet - more unusual for a baby these days.
Lottie - nice but I would use Charlotte
Maeve - lovely
Matilda - I love it but less so because of popularity
Melody - not keen. Elodie is way nicer
Meredith - musty
Rosalie - pretty but twilight?
Sylvie - really cute and lovely
Violet - nice but someone I know with the name says it too much like violent and now I can't unsee it!
