Myself and my husband have really been struggling with a boys name!

I'm due in about 5 weeks and we don't know what we're having (we already have a boy )

I am really loving the name Micah and when I read it I pronounce it 'me kah'

It has been the only name I haven't changed my mind about liking, the only thing making me question it is the way I want to spell & pronounce it

I know it can be pronounced mike-ah but I'm not keen on the pronunciation

I know I can technically pronounce it how I want , but has anyone heard of Micah pronounced Me -Kah

I've seen other spelling but I really like this spelling of it

Thank you

And no, I’m not a pendant

Neither am I, duck

Mike is pronounced like Mike... That probably why you read "Mika" as Mika.

Micah "looks" softer, with the H and the C, hence you wanting to use a softer pronunciation mee-ka.

But yes, Mye-ka is what most people will say.

I know a Micah and it's definitely My-Kah. Sounds better then meeka anyway. Think of the meerkat jokes!

Of course it’s hard to understand - because it’s illiterate and ignorant. Just the same as saying your child is spelled Nigel but pronounced Norris.

No, it's not the same. The "I" in English, can be pronounced with a long EE or an eye sound. So Micah, although not using an ee sound, could be pronounced that way, just from looking. Similarly, Mika, which uses the eye sound, could well use the EE sound, you don't know just from looking!!

Whereas Norris and Nigel? Are clearly not pronounced the same and never ever could be mistaken for having the same sounds. Norris doesn't have a g in it etc.

Micah compares with Dinah, another biblical name

Dinah is pronounced Die-na not Dee-na

Also, I would argue it's far more ignorant to tell another person what they can call their child.

If you actually think that, I’m not sure why you’re on this forum.

You can have an opinion on a name. What you can't do is tell them how to spell it!

What about Tina? ;)

I have never heard of another pronunciation than Mike-ah. There is the female singer Mica Paris, pronounced the way you want, or the male singer Mika? I think your child would have a lifetime of being called Mike-ah and having to correct people.

Mica Paris is pronounced “Meesha” though

@stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou , of course you can tell someone how to spell a name.

If someone suggested they wanted to use a 'unique' spelling of a popular name, many replies would say spell it the usual way. e.g. Leighoh/Leeo/Lio instead off Leo

But you can't just downright tell her she's wrong.

Incidentally, lots of people have to spell their name. Really not an issue

😁

What about Tina? ;)

It's the 'h' on the end that makes the 'i' a long 'igh' instead of 'ee' (I'm pretty sure, anyway 😆). Tina has no 'h' so the 'i' is 'ee'. If it was spelled Tinah, I would pronounce it to rhyme with Dinah.

Of course you can tell someone they are wrong!
