Micah pronounced me-kah

Myself and my husband have really been struggling with a boys name!

I'm due in about 5 weeks and we don't know what we're having (we already have a boy )

I am really loving the name Micah and when I read it I pronounce it 'me kah'

It has been the only name I haven't changed my mind about liking, the only thing making me question it is the way I want to spell & pronounce it

I know it can be pronounced mike-ah but I'm not keen on the pronunciation

I know I can technically pronounce it how I want , but has anyone heard of Micah pronounced Me -Kah

I've seen other spelling but I really like this spelling of it

Thank you

I'd pronounce it my-ka, same as mica, the glittery bits you get in rocks.

alexdgr8 · 01/05/2022 16:59

wasn't he one of the minor prophets, along with amos and hosea ?
it is always pronounced my-kah, never heard it any other way.
pick something else if you insist on a non standard pronunciation of Micah.

I’m pretty sure Micah Richards pronounces his name Mee-Kah. I’m not a footie fan so could be wrong.

JaneJeffer · 01/05/2022 17:01

No he's My-Ka

sw33tchilli · 01/05/2022 17:31

I know a male Mika (pronounced Mee-kah) and a female Micah (Mee-sha).

Thank you for the productive comments on this posts! Seems like there is a lot of variation

I don’t see much variation, tbh. Everyone agrees that Micah is pronounced Mike-ah.

pentagone · 01/05/2022 20:20

It’s Mike- ah. There’s a book in the Bible called this. It’s a very well established pronunciation.

please don’t give your child a name you are not prepared to pronounce. It’ll be a life long pain in the arse for him.

Yes he was! In other words, the way it is pronounced has been established for thousands of years!

it’s a bit like saying, ‘ I really like the name Mary, but I don’t like the sound ‘Mare-ee’ So can I call my daughter ‘mee-ah’, that’s so much more pretty! Do you think that will be ok?’

Libertaire · 01/05/2022 20:26

OP, I don’t know if you’re a football fan, but in case you’re not aware a chap called Micah Richards is a very high-profile TV pundit, and probably the best known Micah in the country. He pronounces his name My-kuh.

Patienceisntvirtuous · 01/05/2022 20:28

I know two Mee-kahs spelt that way. They're both alaskan malamutes.

EdgeOfACoin · 01/05/2022 21:07

Micah is a Hebrew name pronounced Mike-a. As PPs have pointed out, Micah is the name of a minor prophet and one of the books of the Bible.

You may pronounce it differently, just as you may choose to pronounce 'Jonathan' as 'Joe-Nathan' or 'Susan' as 'Sussen', but 'Me-ka' is not an established alternative pronunciation of the name Micah.

Cherryana · 01/05/2022 21:11

Micah (pronounced mike-ah) is a Jewish name.

If people pronounce it meek-ah they are pronouncing it wrong ( possibly because they don’t know the roots/have only read it).

FIZZYTEDDY · 01/05/2022 21:18

Micah = Mike-ah
Mika or Mica = Meek-ah

Please oh please just name them the way you want it said...you and your child will forever spend the rest of their lives saying "it's Micah but pronounced "Meek-ah"

It's a lovely name btw! One of my favs! Said both ways! Smile

MsChatterbox · 01/05/2022 21:19

My son is Mike-ah but nearly every medical professional has pronounced it Meekah

He pronounces it My-Ka

WaterloggedSugar · 01/05/2022 21:24

I'm really surprised by these responses. I know 5 Micahs and they're all 'mee-kah'.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 01/05/2022 21:26

The one I know is a girl...

I don’t think there’s very much variation at all. The PPs are fairly conclusive that Micah = Mike-ah. There is no alternative pronunciation.

I think it’s clear that you do not, in fact, like the name Micah. You do, however, like Mika. I think you need to choose to either like the way the name looks OR like the way it sounds OR choose another name 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dirtystreetpie · 01/05/2022 21:38

There is a Mika in my sons class at school, she is Japanese, beautiful name.

Alwayshoovering · 01/05/2022 21:55

I've only seen the name written down and always assumed it's pronounced me-kah

Starseeking · 01/05/2022 22:11

My DS's nursery friend is Micah, pronounced Mike-ah.

MinglingFlamingo · 01/05/2022 23:34

I know a My-ka and a Mee-ka.

I prefer mee-ka to My-ka as it reminds me of Formica kitchen worktops.

queenofmay · 02/05/2022 00:24

I've always heard Micah pronounced Mike-uh in English (though in other languages like French, I suspect it would be pronounced mee-ka).

I would pronounce Mika as mee-ka. Mika reminds me of the male singer of that name who was popular about 10 years ago.

TheGratefulBread · 02/05/2022 09:06

Hebrew speaker here. It's mike-ah.

The relevant letter in the Hebrew form מִיכָה‎ would never make an "ee" sound.
