Hi all I'm just after your first thoughts when you see the girls name Mazel or Mazelle and how would you pronounce it without looking it up? Mai-zel or Mar-zel or something different?? I like the meaning and the nn mazie but I'm unsure if the name is to out there

Mazela is a great name for corn oil. Just give your child an actual name. Maisie is quite nice.

Misreadprob · 30/03/2022 07:53

Mazel is just hazel with an 'm';
mazelle is just gazelle with an 'm'.

Weird but not too weird.

Notmybloodymonkeys · 30/03/2022 08:12

Kym Mazelle - now I’ll be singing Young Hearts Run Free all day.

NessieMcNessface · 30/03/2022 08:17

Mazela pronounced ‘Mazz-ay-la’ is not too bad but would possibly be shortened to Mazz by friends? I’m afraid the other variations are not for me but as you say it’s your choice. I agree with posters who have said that she will spend her whole life having to tell people how it’s pronounced and spelt.

ButterRose · 30/03/2022 08:53

@Oizys thankyou for the link
To save confusion for everyone I was researching names meaning lucky or good luck and Mazel was on the list I liked it due to the nn potential AND the meaning, I'm after the 'lucky' meaning not just the nickname but I'll look for another name with a more positive reaction now

I would definitely think your daughter had Jewish roots of some kind.

How about Hope if you want someone optimistic?

MorrisOxford · 30/03/2022 09:10

Mazel = Mazel Tov
I'd say it like that (Mazzle) but if you didn't have Jewish friends or family, you might think it was MAY-zle or Maz-ZELL

GeorgiaGirl52 · 30/03/2022 09:14

@Jonesy88

I pronounced it as if it rhymed with Hazel.
Me too.
Dumbledoressister · 30/03/2022 09:18

Honestly when I saw it I thought you'd made up a name and it wasn't even a nice one. I find it strange that you're traditional enough to want your baby to have a "full" name but not traditional enough to pick a real name. I'd just go with Maisie if I were you.

SumAndSubstance · 30/03/2022 09:24

If you want ‘luck’, just go with Felicity!

TottersBlankly · 30/03/2022 09:28

This might lead you away from trouble, OP.

@SumAndSubstance unfortunately I know way too many Felicity's

Mazal Tov literally means luck (mazal) good (tov) but it is used to say congratulations. You wouldn't wish someone "mazal tov" on their driving test, but you would on their birthday or wedding.

watchthis · 30/03/2022 09:41

Mazel rhymes with hazel
Mazelle rhymes with gazelle

SumAndSubstance · 30/03/2022 09:45

Shame! There are quite a few about at the moment.

okayigetit · 30/03/2022 09:52

My first thought was Basel pronounced the American way

KatsuKatsu · 30/03/2022 10:00

Look for the full name first and go for the nickname after, it often just comes naturally once baby is here.

Tibtab · 30/03/2022 10:12

If I heard Mazel (pronounced May-zul) I would assume the person was saying Mabel.

demoness · 30/03/2022 15:16

Mazel just makes me think of Mazel Tov. I think it could be an awkward name to have. I don't think Jews would necessarily find it offensive but they might find it strange.

Maisie is very popular as a name in its own right nowadays. I don't think it's weird in the same way that Bob or Kath on the birth certificate would be.

Coronado2 · 30/03/2022 15:22

@Vampirethriller

Ma Zell
This is how I'd say it too
Nelliephant1 · 30/03/2022 15:22

Mazel tov

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/03/2022 18:38

May-Zell. My first thought would be that you had tried to merge two names, one of them being Hazel. I wouldn't have thought of mazel-tov

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/03/2022 18:39

Makes me think of cooking oil, sorry 🥴

DiscoBadgers · 30/03/2022 18:41

Honestly I would think you were someone who had misspelled Mabel or Hazel.

It’s terrible.

Cisforcamel · 30/03/2022 18:45

I’d think wtf can’t parents just give their kid a normal name with a normal spelling and without the quadrupled barreled surname.
Just no.
