Catherine

We just want a very classic name and Catherine seems very underused which we like.
NN Cate, don't like Kitty or Cath/Cathy.

What's the general opinion?

I know three Catherines, differing age ranges and they are always Catherine, never Cathy. It's a really lovely name.

CakesOfVersailles · 19/03/2022 10:23

Love it, beautiful classic name.

By the way Kate with a K is the classic spelling of the nickname whether you use Catherine or Katherine, but of course since Cate Blanchett, the C spelling has grown in popularity.

Lurking9to5 · 19/03/2022 10:23

It's very boring, but it's never going to disadvantage her or embarrass her and she'll probably be the only one. So it's a fairly good choice overall despite lacking any wow

saraclara · 19/03/2022 10:25

Catherine is a lovely name, but people will always spell it in one of the very many alternative spellings. And honestly, if you don't like the obvious diminutives, I wouldn't choose it. Your child's friends will basically determine what she's called, I'm afraid. Or in my DD's case, a teacher called her by a diminutive one day, and from then on she was called that by everyone!

inheritancetrack · 19/03/2022 10:29

I'm a Katherine, and still got called Cath/Kath and Kathy which I hated. I'm now a Kate. So Catherine will be fine

MakkaPakkas · 19/03/2022 10:30

It's a classic name with no class connotations - you could be royalty or you could be common as muck, no one would know by the name. The only disadvantage is that you always have to spell it for people because there are so many spellings. I think the wide variety of nicknames is an advantage.

Wrinklepicker · 19/03/2022 10:31

Katherine is my favourite name. I like Kat, Kate and Katie as shortenings.

MrsGHarrison87 · 19/03/2022 11:24

I think it's too dated and not in a good way.

Favourodds · 19/03/2022 12:20

Generic middle class name. I imagine you'll dress her in tasteful yet distinctly feminine things from Boden and hope she'll become a lawyer.

bluebunnyblue · 19/03/2022 12:27

I have a 7yo Catherine so I'm biased. We named her after one of her great grandmothers so used that spelling, otherwise I'd have probably gone for Kathryn. We've not had any issues with spelling, just say "Catherine with a C" when someone needs to write it down.

So far she is mostly still known as Catherine, occasionally Cat. I'm happy with our choice, we wanted something classic but not too popular and I think it meets that brief. We don't know any other little Catherines (of any spelling).

LadyCordeliaFitzgerald · 19/03/2022 16:13

Love it. It was on my list but sadly not one dh liked

Caramelcap · 19/03/2022 16:39

My mum's a Kathryn (I personally don't like it, she gets called Kath),
My sister's name is Katie but always gets called Kate (much prefer),
My best friend is Catherine, her family call her Catherine but all her friends call her Catt.

I'd go with Katherine/Kate as a preferred spelling.

Nosetickle · 19/03/2022 18:13

A beautiful and versatile name. A timeless classic. Be careful about choosing your preferred nickname though as nicknames usually are chosen be the person whose name it is.

soulinablackberrypie · 19/03/2022 18:37

I have a colleague called Kate whose full name is Catherine, and it confuses everyone (for example when looking for her on the e-mail list)

There's one in my family and she says it's been a lot better since the Duchess came on the scene.

cptartapp · 19/03/2022 18:50

Love it.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 20/03/2022 05:00

Catherine - love it
Katherine/Katharine/Kathryn - not so much - jarring to my eye

Roselilly36 · 20/03/2022 06:42

Lovely name

DuckyNoMates · 20/03/2022 07:21

Love it, especially with a C

NevaOn · 20/03/2022 07:25

Catherine is nicer. I'm sorry say that every Katherine with a K I have met has been a bossy bitch, so a no to the K version from me.

Porridgeislife · 20/03/2022 07:25

Beautiful name. It’s on our list as Katherine alongside Phoebe, Georgina and Charlotte.

I don’t really mind if my daughter wears Boden and grows up to be a solicitor, there are far worse outcomes & I doubt her name has much bearing on them at all.

SallyWD · 20/03/2022 07:28

Just beautiful.

Lemonlemon88 · 20/03/2022 07:29

My sil is Cate for catherine. Its unusual now and i dont know any little kate or katies but very common in previous generations.

I'm a Catherine and that's the dream. There's only one way to live your life based on your name/star sign/insert nonsense here
Phyllis321 · 20/03/2022 07:33

Love it; my mum's name so I'm biased. Plus Wuthering Heights is my favourite book.

Milliemoo1908 · 20/03/2022 07:36

I’m a Catherine but go by Kate, love both 😊
