We just want a very classic name and Catherine seems very underused which we like.
NN Cate, don't like Kitty or Cath/Cathy.

What's the general opinion?

I prefer the Catherine with a C and Cate was on my DD's name short list.
At the mo Catherine, although classic, will stand out in the sea of Lilys / Avas etc!

But I don't like Cath / Cathy at all!

nuffinimlazyatthemoment · 20/03/2022 07:51

I'm a Catherine. I've been called every nickname possible from Cat to Cathy to Cath to Cate to Kitty. Beware your daughter will also get every spelling variation of it, even if she says 'with a C' or spells the whole thing out.

Apart from that, I like being a Catherine. It's a classic name and doesn't date, despite what a pp says. I also have never set foot in a Boden and I'm not a lawyer (sadly).

gingerhills · 20/03/2022 08:18

I love it but prefer the K spelling and shortened versions of Kate, Katie and Kitty over Cathy and Cath but both versions are gorgeous. It is a classic name.

MojoJojo71 · 20/03/2022 08:36

It’s a nice name and I love Kate but really not keen on Katie, Cathy etc

I think I’d actually prefer to just use Kate rather than the full name and I’m not usually a fan of putting shortened versions on birth certificates

DogsAndGin · 20/03/2022 19:42

Love it and I think Cate is a lovely NN too

Xmasbaby11 · 20/03/2022 19:49

I am 46 and know at least 15 C/Katherines so couldn't get excited about this name. It's just so common in the 40s-50s age range. They all shorten to Cat, none are known as Catherine, and I think they've found it annoying that a - It's v common yet b - they still have to spell it and c - people choose their own nickname and don'talways respect the one you've chosen!

DockOTheBay · 20/03/2022 19:54

I like Katherine/Kate but not Cate

HerculesMulligan · 20/03/2022 19:56

This really made me laugh - I'm a lawyer called Katherine with a wardrobe full of Boden. Am I living the dream?!

PenelopeProsser · 20/03/2022 20:02

I have a hat in this ring.

I much prefer the K spellings and you have to be fucking strict to avoid sodding Kathy (or Cathy) but it is possible.

(I am also a professional women and wear shit loads of boden).

SockFluffInTheBath · 20/03/2022 20:03

It’s my teenage DD’s name so I like it! Not a scrap of Boden has ever crossed the threshold of this house Grin her friends call her Cathy which annoys me intensely but she likes it so I smile politely.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/03/2022 20:04

Sensible and classic and all that jazz. I find it very boring though.

I like it, my sister is called it. However I have read it so many times in this thread it now sounds bizarre Grin

You have fulfilled your true Katherine destiny ❤️

saraclara · 20/03/2022 23:26

@Favourodds

Generic middle class name. I imagine you'll dress her in tasteful yet distinctly feminine things from Boden and hope she'll become a lawyer.
I had a friend whose mother said that when you're choosing a name for a baby daughter, you should make sure that it would sit well with 'the right honourable...' in front of it!
MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 21/03/2022 00:15

Thankfully the types of names that sit well with The Right Honourable as prefix has expanded beyond 'the classics'.

Well quite. Some of us just like old fashioned names Smile I think I like them because I have a common 80s name and always felt people looked down on me because of it when I was mixing above my station darling Sad
Theoldwoman · 21/03/2022 13:39

I went to school with heaps of Catherine's and none of them were very nice which puts me off the name!

If I was going to use it, I would spell it Katharine (like Mansfield) NN Kate (which I love and much prefer as a name!)

ladygindiva · 21/03/2022 13:50

Beautiful x I like the C version of Cate / Catherine more than K too

Pegasussnail · 21/03/2022 13:51

It's a lovely elegant name. I love Cassie as a shortened version

irishfarmer · 21/03/2022 17:07

Beautiful name. Classic and not too common. I went to school with 2 they would both be early 30s now. I don't know any children.

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2022 19:15

I like Catherine but Cate looks wrong. Kate is much nicer

I think Cathy is due a comeback

Pemba · 22/03/2022 21:16

I agree, what's actually wrong with Cathy? 'Heathcliffe, it's me, it's Cathy, I've come home, let me in at your window, oooh!' 🙂

peaceinourtime · 23/03/2022 22:31

it's nice with lots of shorting options, of the Catherine's iv'e met not all shorten it some use the full name and dislike being called Cath/Cathy so lots of options as she gets older.

Gazelda · 23/03/2022 22:53

I know a Katherine. She's been called Katy since birth, and I don't believe anyone's used any other nickname for her.

She doesn't wear Boden and isn't a bossy bitch. But she might turn out to be a lawyer - who knows?

I think it's a classic and elegant name. Not boring, not 'out there', not on trend or old fashioned.
