Nell, Nessa or Nora

Well my daughter is here and struggling to agree on a name.

We both like Nell (not shortened from anything), Nessa…and I like Nora but DH doesn’t.

Other possibilities i might throw in the mix are Flora, Fern and Rosa.

Just interested in thoughts as feeling a bit desperate now.

Nell is lovely. Congratulations!

SleeplessWB · 14/03/2022 18:13

If you like Nell and Nora, why not call her Eleanor/Eleanora and see which of the two nicknames develops naturally?

MadameDragon · 14/03/2022 18:14

All nice names. Put them on a list and take it in turns to cross off the one you like least.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 14/03/2022 18:14

Nell is nice, but Nellie is awful so I would hesitate for that reason.
If you love it then go with it.
Nessa (and Nessie) are ok.
Nora is still a bit too old lady for me.

tearinghairout · 14/03/2022 18:16

I like Nell but don't like Nessa. Nora is just awful.

DotDotDotDotDot · 14/03/2022 18:33

Nell is nice, it has a wholesome vibe to it, I think Tess has a similar feel. I’m not keen on Nessa personally, It makes me think of Loch Ness monster, sorry. I’d cross Nora off the list if your dp doesn’t like it, that actually makes it easier at this stage. I love both Fern and Rosa, they’re two of my favourite girls names. Good luck choosing and congratulations.

mum2jakie · 14/03/2022 18:37

Nessa will always be associated with Gavin and Stacey to me!

beverleybass · 14/03/2022 18:39

Nessa always makes me think of Gavin and Stacey (not necessarily a bad thing!)

I love Nella with Nell for short, pretty and simple but a refreshing step away from Ella/Bella/Ellie

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2022 18:40

Well, your DH doesn't like Nora (I agree with him, it's awful) so that has to come off the list.

Nell is nice (though Nellie really isn't) and I don't mind Nessa.

Maybe Vanessa, shortened to Nessa?

I like Flora, Fern and Rosa too.

Ncwinc · 14/03/2022 18:42

I love Nell.

Dotdotdotdashdashdashdotdotdot · 14/03/2022 18:43

@mum2jakie

Nessa will always be associated with Gavin and Stacey to me!
I never watched it but it was my first thought too!

Nell is lovely op.

Janek · 14/03/2022 18:44

My dd is Nora, it's a blimmin brilliant name!!!

RuthW · 14/03/2022 18:55

Nora. It's the only one that isn't short for something

ISmellBurnings · 14/03/2022 18:59

I think Nessa is awful, it just reminds me of Gavin and Stacey.

Flora is nice as is Nell. Not a fan of Rosa. Rosie and Rose are everywhere.

nee22 · 14/03/2022 20:27

Flora and Rosa are BEAUTIFUL!

DillDanding · 14/03/2022 20:31

Nell is just lovely.

Nora is dreadful and Nessa just makes me think of Gavin and Stacey's Nessa - not good.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/03/2022 20:43

Yes this is a good idea. I like Nell, but she’s probably like some options.

Flora is nice.
Nessa makes me think of a 1970s Welsh midwife a la Nerys Hughes (random) - how about Tessa?
There are way to many Rose/Rosa/Rosies about

Kitkat151 · 14/03/2022 20:44

Nell is lovely
Nessa is a nothing name
Nora is awful

Snowbell999 · 14/03/2022 20:47

I would also put Eleanor on her birth certificate. That way you can use Nell and Nora and also Ellie if you change your mind, even Ella.

Congrats!

Nell on its own is too much of a nickname and Nessa reminds me of Loch Ness. Tessa is too harsh for me. Flora makes me think of feminine hygiene products, sorry! Rosa is okay. Fern is fine.

How about:

Rosalind
Rosaline
Fay
Eleanor
Eleanora
Nerissa (it is Shakespearean)

DarkCorner · 14/03/2022 20:51

For me, of the extended and short list:
Flora - love
Rosa - love
Fern - Also lovely but prefer the above two
Nell - nice enough but a bit nick name-y and reminds me of a naughty kid in DS’s school!
Nessa - don’t like this as a stand alone name
Nora - like but don’t love. I prefer as Norah spelling for some unknown reason.

Snowbell999 · 14/03/2022 20:55

Ahh, and out of these three I'd pick Nora.

Are you by any chance in or close to Scotland? My guess is that Nessa will get her the nickname Ness, potentially Nessie and heaps of Loch Ness jokes but maybe I am overthinking this.

canyoubelievethat · 14/03/2022 20:55

I love Nell and Rosa.

Bostonbullsmumma · 14/03/2022 20:59

I use to look after a little girl called Nora- always thought it was a great name! Lovely little girl too. I like Nell but agree when I hear Nessa I too think Gavin and Stacey!! Love Fern!

Nelliephant1 · 14/03/2022 21:00

Nell. My great aunt was nell, short for Helen.

Carlos18 · 14/03/2022 21:24

Thanks everyone, we plan on nailing it down over the next couple of days. She can’t just be baby girl forever x

Keep those thoughts coming x
