If you put all the grannie and great grandma names from both mine and dh's family together our short list for our dd would be:

Hilda
Muriel
Lydia
Mabel
Ida
Sophia
Helga
Louise

What do you think stands out? I think they are all quite nice actually

AnnaSW1 · 04/03/2022 20:46

momtoboys · 04/03/2022 20:46

KylieCharlene · 04/03/2022 20:46

Lydia first or Sophia, but def Lydia for the win x

Kittykatmacbill · 04/03/2022 20:48

Hilda - love it! Definitely on the list for not ever happening third dd.
Muriel - it’s fine:
Lydia - nope but it’s better than Linda.
Mabel - showing my age but it always makes me think of the blue Peter dog.
Ida - love it.
Sophia - nope - there are so many sophias.
Helga - I am not sure how you could pull that name off!

Louise - it feels a bit dated.

So Hilda or ida for me, unless you can guarantee your dd would be a supermodel then Helga too!

AdaColeman · 04/03/2022 20:49

I love Lydia and Hilda, with Louise in third place.

Not so keen on the rest of the list, with Mabel & Ida in bottom place.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 04/03/2022 20:51

Hilda - Christ no
Muriel -(you're) tirrible (Muriel). Awful name.
Lydia - nice
Mabel - nope
Ida - nope
Sophia - bit boring but nice enough
Helga - hideous
Louise - it's inoffensive

Lemonweightloss · 04/03/2022 20:56

I love Lydia.
Lydia Louise goes well.
I don't like the rest, maybe Ida at a push.

IsadoraQuagmire · 04/03/2022 21:04

Ida is one of my favourite names, I love Hilda and Mabel too. Lydia seems quite common, at least I know several. That would put me off.

WhatNoReally · 04/03/2022 21:06

Ida is an amazing name. It's the name of the heroine in Outside Over There by Maurice Sendak.

Leeloo1233 · 04/03/2022 21:06

Lydia Louise does sound nice!

Unfortunately I'm the closest to grandma Helga 😅 It is not my favourite but maybe, maybe will make a comeback? Muriel is my least favourite. Lydia I love but now all I can think of is the sadistic Aunt Lydia..

Lydia Mabel works nicely together!
Sophia Louise is lovely too (but perhaps a bit less original)

Helga would work splendidly as a middle name. She'll get loads of mileage out of it when she has those idle 'what's your middle name?' chats with colleagues etc. Grin
SallyWD · 04/03/2022 21:13

I love Ida. Lydia is my second favourite.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 04/03/2022 21:13

beats Rose or May into a cocked hat!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/03/2022 21:13

Lydia or Louisa.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 04/03/2022 21:14

Sophia or Ida

ApolloandDaphne · 04/03/2022 21:15

Lydia, Sophia or Mabel.
