Family names - which one is your fav

If you put all the grannie and great grandma names from both mine and dh's family together our short list for our dd would be:

Hilda
Muriel
Lydia
Mabel
Ida
Sophia
Helga
Louise

What do you think stands out? I think they are all quite nice actually

Lydia and Sophia

Helga and Muriel stand out for being truly awful. Sophia is nice but not in a stand out way. Mabel’s ok too.

Sophia and Lydia, or how about Louisa instead of Louise?

Ida and Sophia are my favourites, followed by Lydia and Louise.

However, why do you have to name your dd with one of these names? Just choose a name you both love.

Hilda - NO
Muriel - no
Lydia - nice
Mabel - meh
Ida - nice, blurrs with all the Adas though
Sophia - way overused
Helga - NO
Louise - meh - prefer Louisa

So Lydia wins

Does it have to be a family name ? Fair enough if that's really important to you but otherwise I wouldn't pick a name I don't really love just because it's granny's. A middle name works just as well.

Like Sophia,Louise and Helga. What about Olga. It's Russian/Slavic version of Helga.

Hilda - really horrible! I know a little Hilda and I can't get over it. She's such a cute, clever, smart little thing, I feel bad for her being lumbered with such an ugly name
Muriel - horrible. Dated and depressing
Lydia - biblical, very pretty, familiar but not overdone, I love it
Mabel - very cute and vintage but not twee. I imagine a Mabel would be such a cool little girl. Love it!
Ida - okay, but there are so many Adas, Avas, Evas aroind these days. It doesn't stand out, just blends in with these
Sophia - pretty but very common to the point of being overdone and a bit dull these days
Helga - I actually didn't think there could be a name I liked less than Hilda, but here it is! Helga is somehow worse than Hilda 😂
Louise - dated, but Louisa is lovely

I'd also choose Mabel or Lydia for sure. If Louisa, I'd also add that to the list.

For the love of God please don't name your child Helga, Hilda or Muriel 😂

I have never met a nice Louise so I’m probably biased in hating the name.

Ida is ok but sounds very samey to other very used names.

Hilda - really dislike this name
Muriel - really dislike this name too
Lydia - alright
Mabel - ok. Not great but not awful
Ida - don’t like
Sophia - very pretty, quite popular if that bothers you, lots of little Sophie/Sophias
Helga - really dislike
Louise - nice enough name, not too popular nowadays

I think there are some older names that are classic or timeless, or that just work, and some that will forever be your elderly auntie. Plus some of them just have a really harsh name. The kind of name you make a middle name because you just love auntie Gertrude so, so much.

I really love Hilda out of that list.

Sophia Lydia and Louise was always going g to get the votes as they are normal middle of the range names. They don't. Make me go oh wow but nor do I think yuck when told of the names

I dont mind Helga or Ida as I grew up in Scandinavia where they are normal names

Murial and Mabel are sweet and I feel are making a comeback

If you are closest to Helga I would use that as a middle name.

Muriel - “you’re terrible Muriel!”
Lydia - nice in itself but when I suggested this as a name to DH he said “what, like Chlamydia?” and ruined it forever!
Mabel - pretty
Ida - not my style but I can appreciate its a nice name
Sophia - lovely but very overused so a tad boring
Helga - reminds me too much of Helga Pataki from Hey Arnold (she’s not very nice and has a uni brow 😆)
Louise - it’s okay, it’s very dated to me as loads of my generations’ middle name is Louise but maybe it’s due a revival

I’d go for Mabel Louise out of your lists

I like Sophia and Ida.

Not Hilda or Muriel.
