Hi everyone, what do you think of the name Quillan? It's Irish, it means cub. Our baby boy is due in June, we don't have any Irish links we just like the name. Have you heard it before? Do you like it?

Thanks!

I have the name I can confirm it's not made up. It comes from my Irish ancestors. It is a Irish pronunciation of the name Collin. Cs are pronounced like a Q.

"Cs are pronounced like a Q"

Not exactly, no.

Sometimes, when the Irish letter c is followed by particular letters or letter combinations, then the overall combination can approximate a sound like qu in English. However, the sounds are actually made differently - in different parts of the mouth - they are not really the same. So there is a difference between a fluent Irish speaker saying the first syllable of Coileán in Irish, and someone saying quill in english, but they sound very similar to those who don't speak Irish well.

Often c is better represented by an english k. The Irish name Ciara is pronounced Keera, for example. But it depends on the word.

In Scottish gaelic, 'luan' means either 'Monday' or anatomical things to do with kidneys. It may mean other things in different languages, of course....

The Scottish gaelic word for dog/hound is 'cu'.
