Hi everyone, what do you think of the name Quillan? It's Irish, it means cub. Our baby boy is due in June, we don't have any Irish links we just like the name. Have you heard it before? Do you like it?

Thanks!

I like it and think that Q is a great initial!

I also like Quentin.

Blubells · 02/03/2022 14:42

And in no way accent does Quillan sound like William Confused

Quillan is much nicer imo and doesn't contain Willi Blush

Grinling · 02/03/2022 14:48

My name around the world, means, Hound/Warrior in Gaelic

If by 'Gaelic' you mean Irish, it means 'Monday' (Dé Luan):

@Grinling

Did you get this from a baby names website, OP? ‘Q’ doesn’t exist in the Irish alphabet.

I assume it’s an anglicisation of ‘coileán’, which, yes, is Irish for ‘puppy’.

I think it's a no.

The 'uill'/'will' bit sounds the same

People don't say Willi-um they say Will-yum

Depends on where you are from.

TenRedThings · 02/03/2022 15:17

It's a town in the south of France !

emmsyg · 02/03/2022 15:22

I'm the mum of a Cillian, which I suppose is similar, but is reasonably common here. We live in Northern Ireland and I've never come across Quillan. I agree with one of the posters above, Caolán is a nice alternative and is a more common name (but expect all sorts of pronunciations outside of Ireland )

I say Willi-yum. Sounds very different to Quillan, which I like btw. I assumed people were misreading it as Quillian.

It's definitely not an Irish name as there is no q in the Irish language!

The Irish for cub is coileán, which would be pronounced quil-awn.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 02/03/2022 15:26

@Shuffleuplove

Sounds made up. What about Killian? There’s no Q in Irish
No K in the Irish language either...

It's spelt Cillian, although there are anglicised versions of C names using K instead.

I was going to say exactly this. I know a few dogs called Coileán so would probably steer away from it for a human.
OchonAgusOchonOh · 02/03/2022 15:30

@Grinling - And Kawka and Millish could be twins...

That's brilliant Grin

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/03/2022 15:33

The willi-um reminds me of the annoying kitchen maid from Downton Abbey. She was forever squeaking 'willi-um'.

SageRosemary · 02/03/2022 15:58

OP - I'm guessing you are not Irish, and certainly you are not a fluent speaker.

If you decide to use Quillan as a name please don't claim it as an Irish name, you'll only embarrass yourself.

Yes, I see that if you type in "Quillan baby name" into Google Search you will be led to believe that it is an Irish name by a whole bunch of non-Irish websites.

Could I suggest Fionn or Cathal or Cormac - lovely Irish names not in need of a fada!

Somatronic · 02/03/2022 16:12

@Loopyloulou007 a friend of a friend called their baby girl Luan recently. They are aware that it means Monday in Irish. I guess she was born on a Monday or something.

Blubells · 02/03/2022 17:06

Me too. They sound very different. I prefer Quillan - Q is a cool initial 😎

I think the name Luan may be derived from Lughán? Lugh is a warrior god in Celtic mythology, adding 'án' to a name signifies a diminutive. Not sure about the hound bit though...

Thanks for your replies everyone, good to know that the name is actually not Irish and doesn't mean cub! I do like the name Quinlan too so may consider that

MaddyMagellan · 02/03/2022 23:23

The surname McQuillan is quite common out my way. Origin:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/McQuillan

Sorry, not sure if this is helpful or not!

LizzieAnt · 02/03/2022 23:39

That's interesting, MaddyMagellan, thanks. I hadn't ever come across McQuillan (or Quillan) as a surname before. Maybe it's more common in certain areas as you say.

LondonQueen · 02/03/2022 23:47

Still to Quinn, much nicer name.

intheblightgarden · 03/03/2022 02:53

Quinlan is definitely a surname, but if you like that kind of thing...

My son is Quentin.

Be warned Q names are forever mis pronounced!

Grinling · 03/03/2022 08:25

How on earth do people mispronounce Quentin, @Fcuk38?
