So 10 days in and weirdly the newborn fog has not improved our decision making abilities! The pressure to choose a name is real Confused

My oh can't warm to any of the more conventional names and so we are considering Kiko. It's a variant of the more traditional Japanese name Keiko but easier to pronounce.

What do you think of Kiko? I love it but worry it doesnt sound like a real name.

OP posts:

It doesn't sound like a real name because, as you said, you've just make it up.

If you or your DP have Japanese ancestry then I'd just go for Keiko. Otherwise, I'd pick any K name and use Kiko as a nickname.

Blueuggboots · 03/02/2022 09:40

Do you have Japanese ties?
It's a nice name but might seem a bit odd if you don't have any Japanese associations?

Latenightreader · 03/02/2022 09:42

I have a nail varnish from a shop called Kiko so that was my first thought. I prefer the more traditional spelling of Keiko, but I like more traditional names with nickname options. Mind you, my daughter has Clio as a middle name (the muse of history) and it was only on the way home from the registry office that I remembered it was also a car...

Rrrob · 03/02/2022 09:43

It makes me think of the stationary shop in Covent Garden…

NoResolutionsHere · 03/02/2022 09:46

Wasn't kiko a whale? I think the male chef in below deck was keiko? I named 2 of our children after they were born, took us about 4 days to settle on a name, so i understand the going around in circles and the pressure from people to pick a name. If you live somewhere where kiko wouldn't be weird go for it if you like it. I prefer oldie traditional names so I'm probably not the best person to comment anyway. We had a boy last year but for a girl I liked Isabelle, Martha and Edie.

ItsRainingTacos · 03/02/2022 09:47

Keiko is nice.

I've only heard the name kiko as a makeup brand.

A friend is called Kumiko - it sounds so elegant and graceful (which she is).

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 03/02/2022 09:47

Kiki?

Riverlee · 03/02/2022 09:48

Kiki instead of Kiki? More people will know that name.

Is Kiko pronounced Kee - Ko, or Kay -ko, ie even Kick -oh?

Cissyandflora · 03/02/2022 09:48

Keiko is fabulous!

AtillatheHun · 03/02/2022 09:49

Kumiko and keiko are lovely (slightly odd if there’s no Japanese connection at all). Kiko is make up and therefore sound so. How about Kiki? (Great fan of Kiki Dee and Elton “don’t go breaking my heart”!)

HacerSonarSusPasos · 03/02/2022 09:49

Sorry, Kiko doesn't sound like a proper name to me either. Cute for a kid, less so for a grown woman.

Notwithittoday · 03/02/2022 09:56

Isn’t Kiko a makeup brand? It’s a no from me I’m afraid.
Kiki is short for Kiriaki in Greek. I like the diminutive but not the original.
My lusted after girls name that I wasn’t allowed was Tabitha. Sympathies though it’s hard choosing

SummaLuvin · 03/02/2022 09:59

It wouldn't feel proper to me for a white/British child, but as I don't know alot about Japanese names it wouldn't feel 'off' as a Japanese name.

My first association is the makeup brand, but that wouldn't make it a no go for me, it's not negative and other well used names have been used as makeup brands such as Florence.

Some Japanese girls names I know from sport that I think are really pretty are Mai, Asuka, and Yuna.

Tootbeep · 03/02/2022 13:36

Not a fan, sorry. Keeley?

Mischance · 03/02/2022 13:38

I know someone called Kiko - she is in her 40s.

Synchrony · 03/02/2022 17:27

I wouldn't think twice if I met a baby Kiko. I feel like I've heard it before. I think she was a Japanese character in Bunty magazine. I quite like it.

Blue4YOU · 03/02/2022 17:32

Keiko is lovely.
Have you considered any other names?

irishfarmer · 03/02/2022 18:09

Kiko is the soy sauce I use.

Keiko to me is pronounced very similarly. Are you Japanese? I looked it up it does have a beautiful meaning glad/ rejoicing child

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 03/02/2022 18:12

I recently saw the name Kimiko/Kamiko. How about that with nickname Kiko or Kimi.

user1493494961 · 03/02/2022 18:53

You or DH change your name to Kiko and give your daughter a proper name.

SummaLuvin · 03/02/2022 18:57

@user1493494961 I recognise your username, you spend a lot of time making rude remarks about any names that aren't Charlotte, Oliver, Daniel....

Not saying you have to like the name Kiko, these things are subjective, but it is ignorant to suggest it isn't a 'proper' name, the OP clearly said it is a variant of a traditional Japanese name.

KylieCharlene · 03/02/2022 19:02

I don't like it. It doesn't 'look' right either.
Would YOU like to be called Kiko?
I could think of a million names I'd prefer.
It's a name you'd call a dolphin or a zoo animal.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/02/2022 19:05

I really like Keiko. I wouldn’t mind it as my name at all.

rollercoasterofemotions · 03/02/2022 19:12

I actually really like it! I think Kiko would be cute for a little girl AND cool and strong sounding for an adult woman.

Leeloo1233 · 03/02/2022 19:16

Kiko is very cool! I can see her being a surfer girl as well as a start-up CEO.

Honestly I was in the same boat and couldnt name my child for the first weeks of her life especially because my husband had such different opinions coming from a different culture. All that matters is that you love the name. And Kiko is pretty, she will make her name and no-one will think of make up brands aftee meeting her :)
Good luck and a big hug!
