So 10 days in and weirdly the newborn fog has not improved our decision making abilities! The pressure to choose a name is real Confused

My oh can't warm to any of the more conventional names and so we are considering Kiko. It's a variant of the more traditional Japanese name Keiko but easier to pronounce.

What do you think of Kiko? I love it but worry it doesnt sound like a real name.

Do you have Japanese heritage?

It's a nice name but I remember reading that Japanese names ending in O are considered really unfashionable in Japan these days. Not that that should put you off, just an aside.

Latenightreader · 03/02/2022 19:36

@SummaLuvin

It wouldn't feel proper to me for a white/British child, but as I don't know alot about Japanese names it wouldn't feel 'off' as a Japanese name.

My first association is the makeup brand, but that wouldn't make it a no go for me, it's not negative and other well used names have been used as makeup brands such as Florence.

Some Japanese girls names I know from sport that I think are really pretty are Mai, Asuka, and Yuna.

We clearly follow the same sport!

Kiki sounds more feminine

I hate to be a bit sharp to the mother of a new born - but order a baby book and find a name you like!

You cannot saddle a name that sounds like brand of rice crackers because you have brain fog.

Books are less overwhelming. Take your time. She’s 10 days.

Flutterflybutterby · 04/02/2022 00:15

I know a little Kiko (not in UK) spelled like this. Love it!

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2022 12:46

Keiko is japanese for rehearsal according to an online translator, but wiki says the meaning depends on the kanji.

I was thinking of soy sauce with Kiko but it's Kikkoman, or pushchairs (Chicco)

YeOldeTrout · 04/02/2022 13:42

Kiko is a nickname for Francisco. I think you can use it fine, though, I wouldn't care how made up it is.

AppleTree16 · 04/02/2022 13:43

I LOVE Kiko and Kiki (especially the Ghibli connotations).

FlamingoDust · 06/02/2022 16:02

Love it! Also love Keiko

zebrarobot · 06/02/2022 16:08

Isnt Kiko a make up brand? Not sure about it OP

WhoppingBigBackside · 06/02/2022 16:14

Yes it's a make-up chain store. Kiko could have a sister called Zara.

DramaAlpaca · 06/02/2022 16:16

How about Coco instead?

zebrarobot · 06/02/2022 16:24

if you dont like other names perhaps consider

Juno
Iona
Freya
Amelie
Ettie
Lottie

If Kiko is a genuine Japanese variation of Keiko, then I don't see a problem. But if it's from one of those internet baby sites that often get so much wrong, then it's a bit disrespectful to Japanese culture.

Kiki always makes me think of the parrot in the Enid Blyton children's stories.

If it helps at all, the actress Kika (Kee-kah) Markham's name is a short form of Erika.

Viviennemary · 06/02/2022 16:53

Its absolutely dreadful. Maybe for a parrot but not for a human. Keiko is better. At least it looks more like a name.

bigbird50 · 06/02/2022 17:23

sayuri

RudeAF · 06/02/2022 17:28

I know a Japanese lady called Akiko.

ZebraKid71 · 06/02/2022 20:41

As a nick name fine, but it's too cutesy for a full name for me. I like the above mention of Erika as a full name, that could definitely work.

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 06/02/2022 21:02

Kiko is a lovely name.

Don't bother to ask other people for their opinion. You choose what you like.
